Job summary

Bechtel Corporation in New Albany, OH invites an experienced Lead Piping Field Engineer to organize piping field engineering activities across the project, providing technical leadership for above and below ground piping work and serving as liaison to the design group.

Qualifications

Responsibilities

  • Provide technical and administrative direction to piping field engineers and craft.
  • Establish working relationships with the Project Engineer and coordinate with engineering on deliverables.
  • Direct ES&H program and quality control within the piping discipline; develop ITPs.
  • Oversee field inspections and ensure P&ID checks are complete before turnover.
  • Develop pressure test packages and oversee hydrostatic/pneumatic testing and flushing.
  • Manage quantity take-off, cost estimates, and reporting for piping construction.
  • Develop piping work packages with supervision; assist in short-term scheduling.
  • Review project controls documents and coordinate with controls for cost/schedule progress.
  • Interpret drawings and interface with engineering to resolve constructability issues.
  • Prepare field requisitions and coordinate with procurement for materials.

Project Overview

Bechtel is building a semiconductor manufacturing plant in New Albany, Ohio. We are partnering with the North America Building Trades Unions and suppliers to create several thousand new jobs and work with local education organizations to implement new training programs that will support the future talent pipeline. Bechtel Manufacturing & Technology, Inc. offers engineering, procurement, and construction services for customers in the semiconductor manufacturing, electric vehicle, and data center markets. Headquartered in Reston, Virginia, the M&T global business unit also includes colleagues working in Arizona, Ohio, Texas, India, and additional project locations around the world.

Job Summary

In this position, you will be responsible for the organization and direction of piping field engineering personnel and activities across the project, providing technical leadership for all above and below ground piping work and serving as the engineering liaison to the design functional group. You will interpret design drawings and specifications, supervise field verification of materials, and provide technical direction to piping field engineers and superintendents. The Lead Piping Field Engineer provides project field engineering specialization and expertise with work planning and packaging, material management, quantity verification and validation, safety and quality control, technical inspection and testing, and subcontract coordination, ensuring field engineering activities operate safely, are complete, and conform to quality standards and project requirements.

The successful applicant will work closely with superintendents and direct hire craft to ensure full compliance of the assigned scope of work, and will coordinate with other discipline leads across the Fab, support buildings, utility facilities, and underground scopes.

Major Responsibilities
  • Provide technical and administrative direction to assigned subordinate piping field engineers, and provide technical assistance to the piping superintendents and crafts.
  • Establish a Design/Field Engineering working relationship and lines of communication with the Project Engineer, including agreement on engineering deliverables, and coordinate with engineering on constructability and design issues.
  • Direct the implementation of the project ES&H program and quality control program within the piping discipline, and develop and implement Inspection and Test Plans for major piping activities.
  • Oversee inspection of field installations and completion of associated documentation on a continuing basis, and ensure final P&ID checks are completed prior to turnover.
  • Direct the development of pressure test packages and the witnessing, verification, and acceptance of hydrostatic and pneumatic testing, flushing, and cleanliness verification.
  • Responsible for quantity take-off, control, reporting, and forecasting for all piping quantities, and direct the preparation of cost estimates for piping construction activities.
  • Direct the development of piping work packages in conjunction with supervision, and assist supervision and project controls in the preparation of detailed work plans and short-term schedules.
  • Review and provide input to project controls documents on progress relating to cost and schedule, and coordinate the interfacing between the construction automation plan and the project controls program at the jobsite.
  • Interpret design drawings and interface with the engineering office to resolve design and constructability issues, and direct the preparation of field change documentation and as‑built documentation as required.
  • Direct the preparation of requisitions for field procured materials, material substitution, services, and equipment, and approve requisitions as delegated by the Project Field Engineer.
Major Responsibilities(Contd.)
  • Work with suppliers to ensure compliance with project drawings and specifications, coordinate and review vendor drawings, and work with Procurement's expediting team to ensure delivery of vendor materials to support the project schedule.
  • Review material and receiving reports and warehousing to ensure delivery of correct materials, complete material receipt inspections as required, and ensure materials are stored properly to ensure environmental protection and preservation of piping components.
  • Work within TEAMWorks to verify accurate data from engineering and suppliers, and direct the maintenance of construction engineering records for job history, including the receiving, distribution, and filing of plans and specifications.
  • Develop and ensure implementation of the project construction procedures from the Standard Work Process Procedures (SWPPs), coordinate any deviations from SWPPs, and coordinate with superintendents and subcontractors to plan construction schedules.
  • Coordinate subcontract activities to ensure materials, equipment, and quality comply with design plans and specifications, and plan and recommend procedures to be implemented by superintendents to ensure construction operations are within the requirements of engineering design and specifications.
  • Work closely with other discipline field engineers and coordinate efforts and activities to meet project requirements, including coordination with cleanroom protocol level restrictions and turnover system boundaries.
Education And Experience Requirements
  • Requires bachelor's degree (or international equivalent) and 8-10 years of relevant experience or 12-14 years of relevant work experience.
Required Knowledge and Skills:
  • Proficient level of understanding of mechanical piping systems, connections, and components, including above and below ground installation methods.
  • Ability to read and understand isometrics, P&ID’s, orthographics, plans, and other design drawings.
  • Familiarity with ASME B31.3 and applicable welding, examination, and pressure testing requirements.
  • Technical knowledge of all phases of construction engineering relating to the piping discipline while interfacing with all areas of the project, and thorough knowledge of construction activities as they relate to engineering disciplines, cost and scheduling, and contract administration.
  • Knowledge of the use of subcontracts and of the contractor and subcontractor responsibilities contained in subcontract documents, with prior experience supervising and administering subcontractors.
  • Knowledge and understanding of the application and requirements of the Project Environmental, Safety, & Health (ES&H) Handbook, Bechtel Core Processes, project‑specific environmental compliance requirements, and Bechtel’s “Zero Accidents” safety program. Familiarity with Bechtel’s Business Ethics handbook and policies.
  • Understanding of applicable Bechtel work processes including Standard Work Process Procedures is preferred.
  • Working knowledge of applicable industry codes and standards is required. Excellent communication and problem‑solving ability.
  • Computer literate in word processing, spreadsheet, and database applications.
  • Work includes field inspections and the physical ability to conduct field inspections which require the following activities: extensive walking in and around a construction site, climbing ladders, climbing scaffolding, working on elevated platforms, working on uneven surfaces, and working in small or confined spaces.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience in semiconductor fabrication facilities, including process piping, high purity systems, and specialty gas and chemical distribution, is preferred.
  • Prior experience leading a discipline field engineering team on a large-scale direct hire and subcontracted construction project.
  • Familiarity with Bechtel Standard Applications (BSAPs), including TEAMWorks, Aconex, DSCS, Unifier, Agile, Navisworks, and other automation tools used on Bechtel projects.
  • Proficiency in Navisworks Simulate and 3D model navigation is preferred.
  • Experience with Advanced Work Packaging and construction work package development is preferred.
