Project Overview

The rapid growth of AI and digitalization is fueling unprecedented demand for data centres that require large, reliable sources of energy. In response to this market trend, the Renewables & Clean Power (RCP) team has signed an early works contract to build one of the largest gas‑fired power generation facilities in the U.S. This project is of significant scale and complexity, and our team is helping the customer progress early‑stage development, which will lead to the start of full EPC delivery this year.

The candidate will act as the Area Superintendent on the upcoming project. The candidate may start in the home office in Reston, VA, as single status, to support preconstruction planning, ahead of project mobilization to the field when the candidate will locate on a long‑term assignment to Cheyenne, Wyoming. This position is contingent upon project award.

Job Summary

As the Area Field Superintendent (Switchyard), you will lead a team and supervise superintendents and/or craft professionals on a project. You will direct craft professional activities and work schedules, and coordinate subcontract work activities and team development. Your oversight will ensure craft professionals have the tools required to be productive, comply with project policies, procedures, and job site work rules and procedures, and perform within specifications, schedules and budgets.

Your main area of focus will be the supervision of the GIS Switchyard/Microgrid and all associated activities within your area including subcontract activities, foundation installation, cabling and terminations, transformer setting, and all other activities associated with the works in this area.

Major Responsibilities
  • Receives assignments with clear goals and the process by which to meet goals
  • Provides direction to employees according to established policies and management guidance
  • Administers company policies that directly affect subordinate employees
  • Recommends changes to policies that affect immediate organization(s)
Leadership / Supervision
  • Higher level management reviews work to measure meeting of objectives
  • Supervises and/or directs craft activities and disciplinates superintendents as assigned
  • Schedules work to be performed and reviews work accomplished by each craft
Planning / Productivity
  • Determines workforce requirements
  • Coordinates established area operational plans
Tools, Materials & Equipment
  • Monitors tool and equipment usage on the site
  • Oversees the preparation of Field Material Requisitions for tools and consumables and ensures that the crafts have the tools they require to be productive
Safety & Quality
  • Ensures the most current design document is used to complete the work and that all design changes are approved prior to implementation
  • Ensures assigned construction operations and subcontractors' performance are in compliance with specifications and within schedules and budgets
Technical
  • Works with Construction Field Engineers, Foremen, and Craft Professionals, in interpreting Engineering design documents, vendor documents, and other technical documents
  • Oversees engineering solutions with Subcontractors, and Foremen and Craft Professionals
Education and Experience Requirements
  • Requires bachelor's degree (or international equivalent) and 8–10 years of relevant experience or 12–14 years of relevant work experience
Required Knowledge and Skills
  • Experience in GIS switchgear construction including prefabricated buildings, including outdoor and indoor electrical equipment, cabling terminations, transformers, and associated foundations and structural systems
  • Demonstrated multidisciplinary field supervision experience (civil, electrical, structural) is desirable
  • Working knowledge of NEC, NFPA 70E, IEEE, and ACI standards as applied to GIS and transformer installations
  • Experience supporting energization, testing, and system turnover activities
  • Knowledge of direct hire construction
  • Experienced implementing and utilizing Bechtel Standard Work Process Procedures is preferred
  • Thorough knowledge of construction activities as they relate to engineering disciplines, cost and scheduling, and contract administration
  • Knowledge of the use of subcontracts and of contractor/subcontractor's responsibilities contained in subcontract documents
  • Extensive background in construction projects, managing staff, providing leadership, maintaining good client relationships and developing talent within the project
  • Computer‑literate in word processing, spreadsheet and database applications
  • Familiar with current industry quality standards
  • Displays effective communications skills crucial to motivating team members and presenting plans in a clear and concise manner
  • Strong interpersonal and teamwork skills
  • Knowledge of cost management including estimating and forecast development
