Project Overview

The rapid growth of AI and digitalization is fueling unprecedented demand for data centers that require large, reliable sources of energy. In response to this market trend, the Renewables & Clean Power (R&CP) team has signed an early works contract to build one of the largest gas‑fired power generation facilities in the U.S. This project is of significant scale and complexity, and our team is helping the customer progress early‑stage development, paving the way for full EPC delivery this year. The candidate will act as the Area Superintendent on the upcoming project, starting in a home office in Reston, VA, to support pre‑construction planning, and will relocate to Cheyenne, Wyoming for a long‑term assignment once the project is awarded.

Job Summary

As the Area Field Superintendent (Switchyard), you will lead a team and supervise superintendents and/or craft professionals on the project. You will direct craft professional activities and work schedules, coordinate subcontract work activities and team development, and ensure that craft professionals have the tools required to be productive while complying with project policies and job‑site rules. Your oversight will guarantee performance within specifications, schedules, and budgets.

Your main area of focus will be the supervision of the GIS Switchyard/Microgrid and all associated activities within your area, including subcontract activities, foundation installation, cabling and terminations, transformer settings, and all other works in this area.

Major Responsibilities
  • Receives assignments with clear goals and processes to meet those goals.
  • Provides direction to employees according to established policies and management guidance.
  • Administers company policies that directly affect subordinate employees.
  • Recommends changes to policies that affect the immediate organization(s).
Leadership / Supervision
  • Supervises and directs craft activities and discipline superintendents as assigned.
  • Schedules work to be performed and reviews work accomplished by each craft.
Planning / Productivity
  • Determines workforce requirements.
  • Coordinates established area operational plans.
Tools, Materials & Equipment
  • Monitors tool and equipment usage on the site.
  • Oversees the preparation of field material requisitions for tools and consumables to ensure crafts have the necessary equipment.
Safety & Quality
  • Ensures the most current design documents are used to complete the work and that all design changes are approved prior to implementation.
  • Maintains compliance with specifications, schedules, and budgets for assigned construction operations and subcontractors.
Technical
  • Works with construction field engineers, foremen, and craft professionals to interpret engineering design documents, vendor documents, and other technical documents.
  • Oversees engineering solutions with subcontractors, foremen, and craft professionals.
Education and Experience Requirements
  • Bachelor’s degree (or international equivalent) with 8–10 years of relevant experience, or 12–14 years of relevant work experience.
Required Knowledge and Skills
  • Experience in GIS switchgear construction, including prefabricated buildings, outdoor and indoor electrical equipment, cabling terminations, transformers, and associated foundations and structural systems.
  • Demonstrated multidiscipline field supervision experience (civil, electrical, structural). Desirable.
  • Working knowledge of NEC, NFPA 70E, IEEE, and ACI standards as applied to GIS and transformer installations.
  • Experience supporting energization, testing, and system turnover activities.
  • Knowledge of direct‑hire construction.
  • Experience in implementing and utilizing Bechtel Standard Work Process Procedures. Preferred.
  • Thorough knowledge of construction activities related to engineering disciplines, cost and scheduling, and contract administration.
  • Knowledge of the use of subcontracts and the responsibilities of contractors/subcontractors contained in subcontract documents.
  • Extensive background in managing staff, providing leadership, maintaining client relationships, and developing talent within projects.
  • Computer‑literate in word processing, spreadsheets, and databases.
  • Familiarity with current industry quality standards.
  • Effective communication skills crucial to motivating team members and presenting plans clearly.
  • Strong interpersonal and teamwork skills.
  • Knowledge of cost management including estimating and forecast development.
