Job description

  • Close Visual Acuity-work includes data/figures; view a computer screen; extensive reading

Work involves keeping abreast of current transportation design innovations, modifications, laws, regulations, policies and procedures; overseeing: construction operations in the area office to include review of shop drawings, compliance with regulations, approval of letting advertising and conducting pre-construction meetings and public hearings; overseeing inspection of construction projects and temporary traffic control, operations of the maintenance sections to include planning and budgeting work with maintenance supervisors and district staff, right-of-way plan preparation and monitors acquisition processes to coordinate project letting, utility relocation/adjustment inspection and responsible for material testing and construction engineering.


Essential Duties


  • Approves and inspects driveway, utility and drainage fill permits, and monitors removal of illegal signs

  • Approves project candidate submission for program calls

  • Coordinates transportation planning activities, which may include working with a Metropolitan Planning Organization, develops the 20-year Transportation Plan and oversees the Transportation Improvement Plan

  • Directs administrative and business operation activities including human resources, training programs, inventory oversight, safety and preparation and monitoring of budgets

  • Monitors signing, pavement marking and striping to ensure compliance with standards

  • Oversees, coordinates and monitors contractors' compliance with plans and specifications; authorizes payment of estimates; resolves differences, disputes and claims; plans preparation and approval of expenditures

  • Oversees, plans and executes emergency procedures, preparedness and response for a geographic area; as required responds to office/incident location to direct/oversee activities for emergency situations/conditions

  • Provides direction for construction projects and/or contract change negotiations

  • Represents the Department to the public; answers inquiries from governmental officials, makes media presentations, speaks at public functions and participates in other civic endeavors

  • Performs other job responsibilities as assigned


Minimum Qualifications

Education

Bachelor's Degree in engineering or related science bachelor's or higher degree accepted by TX PELS.


Experience


  • 5 years transportation engineering. (Experience can be satisfied by full time or prorated part time equivalent). Related graduate level education may be substituted for experience on a year per year basis. Substitutions for Minimum Qualifications

  • Must have 1 year supervisory/managerial experience. Project leader or lead worker experience may substitute for supervisory/managerial experience.


Licenses and Certifications


  • Valid driver’s license. This position requires driving a state vehicle.

  • Licensed Prof Engineer*

  • Professional engineers licensed in another state in the United States, but not currently licensed in the State of Texas, must (1) meet the license requirements of the State of Texas Engineering Practices Act, (2) obtain a professional engineering license from the State of Texas within six (6) months of the date of hire, and (3) sign an agreement to that effect as a condition of employment.

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions


  • Sedentary work: Lift up to 10 lbs at a time and occasionally carry files/small tools

Conditions of Employment



  • Must pass a drug test prior to employment for safety impact positions. This is a Safety Impact position and will be subject to random drug testing.

    • Must maintain regular and dependable attendance and adhere to established work schedules.

    • Must be available to work weekends and holidays, as required.

    • Must participate in a rotating on-call schedule, when applicable to the position.

    • Must wear employer-provided personal protective equipment (PPE) and comply with all applicable safety policies, procedures, and regulations.




Position Information

TxDOT's Waco District is looking for a leader to be the next Area Engineer at the Waco Area Office. As Area Engineer you will oversee day to day construction and maintenance operations with the office area of responsibility and will have direct accountability to the delivery of projects and the ongoing maintenance of the roadway system. You will work with TxDOT planning and design staff as well as local governments and Metropolitan Planning Organizations to set long term priorities for the transportation systems within the greater Waco area. You will lead a great team working projects that improved impacts the lives of central Texas every day. You will be a daily voice for Texas internal and external Safety Missions.
