Job Purpose & Overview

The Area Chief of Staff leads, develops, and manages associate veterinarians in Banfield Pet Hospitals to sustain a culture of quality care and achieve hospital performance objectives. This role is responsible for doctor engagement, staff coaching, quality compliance, and operational excellence across assigned hospitals.

Responsibilities

• Live and exemplify the Five Principles of Mars, Inc. within the team.
• Act as the Responsible Veterinarian for Veterinary and Pharmacy Board Permits as required.
• Own the management of controlled substance inventory for relief doctors.
• Drive doctor engagement and retention by continuously assessing risk and creating a supportive culture.
• Oversee the coaching program for newly hired veterinarians, ensuring a productive onboarding experience.
• Ensure experiential learning to develop clinical, surgical, and dental skills tailored to veterinarians.
• Partner with the Director of Veterinary Quality and Talent Acquisition to recruit veterinary talent.
• Serve as a brand ambassador in the local veterinary community.
• Deliver a high‑quality hospital experience to externs, student programs, and candidates.
• Support associate doctors in achieving productivity goals through high‑quality medicine and preventive care.
• Deliver veterinary operations KPI’s for assigned hospitals.
• Collaborate with practice managers to develop, execute, and revise plans for targeted KPI achievement.
• Accountable for hospital OGSM performance linked to quality medicine outcomes.
• Build a veterinary leadership bench and maintain succession plans for the hospital pod.
• Maintain compliance with Banfield’s clinical essentials, regulatory requirements, and industry standards through audits and reviews.
• Ensure operation meets all local, state, and federal regulations, including controlled substance and radiation safety.
• Develop and execute plans to resolve identified gaps.
• Validate clinical skills of veterinary assistants and technicians within the pod.
• Ensure adequate skill‑development plans for identified gaps.
• Champion preventive care culture through communication and behavior validation.
• Promote a “say yes” culture to improve client access and service, meeting client experience scorecard goals.
• Resolve client complaints related to medical standard of care in a timely manner.
• Manage medical equipment inventory and new equipment requests with the Director of Veterinary Quality.
• Provide the highest level of veterinary care in a professional, ethical manner, delivering exceptional client and pet experience.
• Establish trust and gain compliance of clients through comprehensive preventive care and communication.
• Perform other job duties as assigned.

Special Working Conditions

Extended work hours beyond 40, significant computer use, mobility requirements (standing, walking, lifting up to 50 lbs), and exposure to pets, anesthesia, radiation, biological hazards, and controlled substances. Some travel to other hospitals and vendors may be required.

Experience, Education & Training

Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM/VMD) or equivalent foreign degree. Valid veterinary license in good standing or eligibility for licensure in all applicable states. Minimum three years of small‑animal medicine and surgery practice experience.

Competitive salary range: $142,000–$205,000 (annually), dependent on experience, skill, education, and location.
