Job summary

UIC Bowhead Transport Company, LLC is seeking an experienced Vessel Master to command and operate company vessels in the safe transport of cargo across oceans, coastal waters, bays, lakes, and rivers. You will supervise a crew of 5–7, ensure regulatory compliance, and serve as the company’s on-site representative during interactions with clients and officials.

Qualifications

  • MMC – U.S. Coast Guard Master of Motor Vessels (200 GRT) with STCW endorsements.
  • TWIC with at least six months before renewal.
  • U.S. Passport with at least six months before renewal.
  • Driver’s License with a minimum of six months before renewal.
  • Minimum of three years Arctic vessel operations experience.
  • Prior supervisory experience in a maritime environment.
  • Fluent English communication, including via radio.
  • Ability to perform medium-heavy labor and stand/walk for up to 6 hours.
  • Willingness to work irregular hours, including nights and emergencies.
  • Commitment to safety, teamwork, attendance with positive attitude.
  • OSHA 10-Hour Construction Safety Card preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Command the vessel to safely transport cargo across oceans, coastal waters, bays, lakes, and rivers.
  • Set course using navigational aids and direct helm operations.
  • Determine vessel position using GPS, radar, or celestial navigation.
  • Inspect vessel to ensure compliance with safety and regulations.
  • Coordinate signaling devices to communicate with nearby vessels.
  • Maintain accurate ship logs and required documentation.
  • Train, supervise, and evaluate crew members (typically 5-7).
  • Operate vessel systems in rivers or canals.
  • Communicate with docks, locks, and vessel traffic via radio.
  • Supervise loading/unloading of cargo.
  • Ensure compliance with company policies, USCG, environmental standards.
  • Serve as on-site representative with clients and regulators.
  • Act as emergency on-site coordinator.
