Job summary

The North Slope Borough Fire Department seeks an experienced leader to command fire, rescue, and ambulance operations in Barrow. You will recruit, train, equip, and supervise staff, ensuring readiness and compliance with safety standards.

You will oversee station and equipment maintenance, coordinate apparatus checks, and engage the community with safety education. The role includes reporting to council and handling documentation, with Alaska certifications and Arctic firefighting expertise

Qualifications

• Associate's Degree in Fire Science or equivalent within one year of hire.
• Alaska Firefighter II certification or equivalent within one year of hire.
• EMT I certification required.
• Fire Service Instructor certification or ability to obtain within one year of hire.
• Five years Arctic firefighting experience.
• Two years supervisory work experience.
• Valid Alaska Driver's License per North Slope Borough criteria.

Responsibilities

• Serve as Incident Commander for fire, rescue, and ambulance operations in Barrow.
• Recruit, train, equip, lead, and appoint staff and officers; ensure readiness.
• Supervise emergency responders and maintain equipment, facilities, and inventory.
• Coordinate weekly and monthly apparatus checks for Barrow staff.
• Provide public fire information, education, and safety programs for Barrow.
• Attend City of Barrow Council meetings to present monthly reports.
• Complete and submit required documents and reports.
