Job description

Company Description

Art & Carpentry (A&C) is a custom millwork, fabrication, and installation firm based in Brooklyn, NY, serving the retail programs of some of the world's most iconic luxury houses, including leading brands within the Richemont and LVMH portfolios, among other prestigious names in luxury retail. We design, build, and install the front-of-house and back-of-house millwork that defines these brands' flagship and boutique environments across the US and internationally.

Unlike a typical design firm, A&C operates as a full in-house production company. Our designers work side by side with our own carpentry and CNC shops, not a subcontracted network. That means the people specifying and detailing the work are directly connected to the people building it, and design decisions get tested against real fabrication and installation constraints from day one. It's a demanding standard: our clients build stores that represent some of the most recognized names in luxury, and the tolerance for error is low. We've built our reputation on meeting that standard consistently, project after project.

Position Overview

We're looking for a Millwork and Architectural Designer to join our Brooklyn studio and take ownership of projects from initial design through final installation. This is a more hands‑on role than a typical millwork/architectural design position: you won't just hand off drawings and move to the next project. You'll work cross-functionally with front-office project managers and our production departments (carpentry, CNC cutting, and others) to make sure your designs are executed correctly on the shop floor and in the field, catching and resolving issues before they become costly problems.

This is a 5-day-in-office role based in our Brooklyn studio, with domestic and international travel for site surveys as projects require. Our client base is global, and projects may take you beyond the US. If you want a design role where you stay embedded in the full lifecycle of a project, not just the drawing phase, this is built for that.

What You'll Do

  • Design and Detail Custom Millwork: Develop cabinetry, woodwork, and architectural detailing for luxury retail buildouts, balancing aesthetic intent with structural and fabrication requirements.

  • Model and Draft for Production: Build accurate 3D models and technical/shop drawings that our fabrication and installation teams can execute with precision.

  • Coordinate Across Teams: Work cross-functionally with front-office project managers and production departments (carpentry, paint, CNC cutting, and others) to ensure designs are executed accurately from start to finish, resolving issues on the shop floor and in the field before they impact schedule or budget.

  • Collaborate with Architects and Clients: Work directly with client design teams and architects to integrate millwork into broader architectural and retail brand programs. You'll need to be comfortable leading client meetings, aligning on project scope up front, presenting design solutions, and adjusting the design in real time as changes come up throughout the production process.

  • Advise on Materials and Finishes: Recommend materials, finishes, and hardware that meet both the design vision and the durability/functional demands of high-traffic retail environments.

  • Own Quality from Concept to Install: Stay involved through fabrication and installation to ensure the finished product matches the design intent and A&C's craftsmanship standards.

  • Manage Multiple Projects: Juggle several concurrent projects, each with its own client, timeline, and level of design complexity, while keeping a clear, up‑to‑date read on the status of every project you're responsible for.

  • Escalate and Document: Quickly flag issues or conflicts to front-office project managers before they impact schedule or budget, stay actively involved in project coordination so everyone stays aligned, document key decisions as projects evolve, and keep thorough, organized records across all your projects.

  • Solve Problems on the Fly: Navigate design challenges, site conditions, and last‑minute changes without losing sight of budget, timeline, or design integrity.

Must-Have Qualifications

  • Education: Bachelor's degree in Architecture, Interior Design, Industrial Design, or a related field, or equivalent hands‑on experience.

  • Experience: 3–5+ years in millwork design, architectural detailing, or a closely related field. Experience with high‑end residential, hospitality, or luxury retail projects is a strong plus.

  • Software: Experience with design, drafting, and 3D-modeling tools such as AutoCAD, Rhinoceros 3D. Familiarity with 3DS Max, SketchUp, or similar platforms is a plus.

  • Technical Knowledge: Solid understanding of millwork fabrication methods, materials, and construction practices. You know how a drawing becomes a physical object.

  • Detail Orientation: A sharp eye for precision, proportion, and craftsmanship, with strong technical drawing standards.

  • Communication: Confident presenting and explaining design decisions to clients, architects, and internal teams alike.

  • Collaborative Mindset: Comfortable working cross-functionally in a fast‑paced shop environment where design, engineering, and fabrication are tightly linked.

  • Organizational Skills: Proven ability to manage multiple projects at once without letting quality or deadlines slip.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Additional Software: Familiarity with 3DS Max, SketchUp, or similar platforms.

  • Bilingual: Fluency in English and Spanish is a plus.

What You Can Expect From A&C

At A&C, you'll work on flagship and back‑of‑house builds for some of the most recognized names in luxury retail, with direct exposure to the full lifecycle of a project, from design through fabrication and install. You'll be part of a growing, modernizing company that's investing in better tools, systems, and processes, within a collaborative studio environment where design and craftsmanship are equally valued.
