Job description

Architectural Designer
3–5 Years Experience | Custom Sustainable Residential Architecture
Full-Time | In-Person | Fairfield County, Connecticut
About Trillium Architects

Trillium Architects is an award-winning architectural firm specializing in high-end, sustainable residential design throughout Connecticut, Westchester County, New York, and the greater NYC Tri-State area.

Our work combines thoughtful design with advanced building science to create beautiful, healthy, energy-efficient homes. We are recognized for our expertise in Net Zero, Passive House, LEED, and high-performance residential design, and our projects range from major renovations and additions to custom new homes.

In 2024 we proudly became a worker-owned co-operative. We now have four owners and are actively seeking to grow that number.

We are looking for a talented Architectural Designer with approximately 3 – 5 years of professional experience to join our collaborative team.

About the Role

The candidate will work closely with the firm’s principals and project architects throughout all phases of a project, from schematic design and design development through construction documents and construction administration.

This is a hands‑on position offering exposure to the complete residential design and construction process. You will participate in developing designs, preparing and coordinating construction documents, researching materials and building systems, working with consultants, and helping resolve design and construction issues in the field.

We are looking for someone who combines strong design sensibility with technical curiosity and rigorous attention to detail. An interest in sustainable architecture, building science, and high-performance construction is particularly important.

Responsibilities
  • Participate in schematic design, design development, and construction documentation
  • Prepare and coordinate architectural drawings, details, and specifications
  • Develop 3D models, presentations, and design studies
  • Coordinate drawings and information with structural, civil, mechanical, energy modeler, and other consultants
  • Research materials, products, building systems, and construction techniques
  • Assist with code and zoning research
  • Participate in client, consultant, and contractor meetings
  • Assist with construction administration, including site visits and review of construction progress
  • Help translate design concepts into coordinated, detailed, and buildable solutions
  • Work collaboratively with principals, project architects, consultants, contractors, and clients
Qualifications

The preferred candidate will have:

  • A Bachelor of Architecture, Master of Architecture, or 5-year professional architectural degree
  • Approximately 3–5 years of professional architectural experience
  • Experience preparing construction documents and architectural details
  • Strong design and graphic presentation skills
  • Rigorous attention to detail and consistency
  • Excellent written, verbal, and organizational skills
  • The ability to manage multiple tasks and meet project deadlines
  • Confidence to ask questions, contribute ideas, and collaborate with others
  • A strong interest in building technology, construction, and architectural detailing
  • Authorization to work in the United States
  • Reliable transportation for travel to local project sites as needed

Experience with custom residential architecture is strongly preferred.

Technical Skills

Proficiency with architectural drafting and modeling software is required. Experience with the following is particularly valuable:

  • ArchiCAD (Ideal but not required. Revit users will be trained in ArchiCAD)
  • Familiarity with 3D modeling and rendering
  • Adobe Creative Suite, including Photoshop and InDesign (ideal but not required)

Experience with Passive House, Net Zero, LEED, energy-efficient construction, or building science is a significant plus, but we also welcome candidates who are eager to develop expertise in these areas.

Candidates pursuing architectural licensure are encouraged to apply.

What We Offer

Trillium Architects provides the opportunity to work on distinctive custom residential projects while developing expertise in sustainable and high-performance architecture. We offer a collaborative working environment with direct access to experienced architects and involvement in projects from initial concept through completed construction.
