Job Title: Architect / Job CaptainJob Description

This role is ideal for an experienced Architect / Job Captain who will work closely with a Healthcare-focused team while supporting industrial, civic, and education-related projects. You will participate in all phases of architectural projects, including conceptual design, schematic development, construction documents, and construction administration. The position offers the opportunity to collaborate with integrated design teams on tenant improvements, new construction, and renovations of existing buildings of varying sizes and complexity.

Responsibilities

• Work on a variety of project types, including tenant improvements, new construction, and renovations of existing buildings in healthcare, industrial, civic, education, and commercial sectors.
• Participate in design efforts and contribute to the development of schematics and design development documents.
• Lead and perform drawing production work through all project phases, from initial concepts to detailed construction documents.
• Coordinate drawings with specifications prepared by other team members to ensure consistency and completeness.
• Manage consultant coordination, including mechanical, electrical, plumbing (M/E/P), structural, furniture, and audiovisual disciplines.
• Provide technical oversight for the project team and make independent decisions related to design, documentation, and project execution.
• Coordinate project documentation with clients, consultants, contractors, and internal project team members to maintain clear communication and alignment.
• Review applicable building codes and implement them in project design and documentation to ensure code compliance and constructability.
• Collaborate with QA/QC team members and implement their recommendations to improve quality and reduce risk.
• Participate in all aspects of construction administration, including site visits, reviewing shop drawings, responding to RFIs, managing change orders, and reviewing pay applications.
• Exercise independent judgment in the evaluation, selection, and use of standard techniques and procedures, and proactively solve problems encountered during project delivery.
• Receive project direction from Project Managers and Designers while taking the lead on some projects and guiding project teams as needed.
• Coordinate all aspects of assigned projects, ensuring that design intent, technical quality, schedule, and client goals are consistently met.

Essential Skills

• 7–10+ years of recent experience as a Job Captain or in a comparable architectural role, with substantial building experience.
• 7–15 years of architectural experience with strong knowledge of building construction and construction documents.
• 10+ years of commercial architecture and building experience, including work on healthcare, industrial, multi-family, clinics, and surgery centers.
• Proficiency in Revit for production and documentation across all project phases.
• Demonstrated experience producing high-quality construction documents and coordinating them with specifications.
• Thorough knowledge of architectural practice and processes, particularly in healthcare project types.
• Ability to provide technical oversight, make independent decisions, and manage project documentation and coordination.
• Strong listening and communication skills, with the confidence to manage quality processes and direct resources to meet project goals.
• Ability to work effectively both independently and in a collaborative team setting.
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office for project communication, documentation, and coordination.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

• Experience as a Project Architect or Project Manager in a previous firm.
• Experience in industrial, civic, and education market sectors.
• Professional architectural licensure (PA license preferred but not mandatory).
• Experience with Bluebeam for document review and markups.
• Experience with Adobe Photoshop for presentation and visualization support.
• Background in coordinating M/E/P, structural, furniture, and AV consultants on complex projects.
• Experience participating in and leading construction administration activities, including site visits and review of RFIs, change orders, and pay applications.

Work Environment

The work environment combines independent responsibility with strong team collaboration in a setting that feels less corporate and more like a family-oriented studio. You will join a group of approximately eight professionals within a commercial team that delivers about one-third of the firm’s projects, offering exposure to a broad range of work and close interaction with experienced architects. The culture emphasizes quality, communication, and shared problem-solving. Dress is business casual, and you will work with integrated design teams using tools such as Revit, Microsoft Office, Bluebeam, and Adobe Photoshop to deliver projects in healthcare, industrial, civic, education, and commercial markets.

Job Type & Location

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Fargo, ND.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $38.00 - $45.00/hr.

Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
