Description

The authorized level of the position is Architect V. Applications are being accepted down to the Architect IV in the event of recruiting difficulties.

Salary Range

Architect IV, AR‑24: $8,465.00 – $10,804.00 per month
Architect V, AR‑26: $9,141.00 – $11,669.00 per month

Responsibilities

• Supervises and works with a small group of lower-level architects and draftsmen in the preparation of designs, plans, specifications and estimates for major and complex buildings and structures such as schools, health, social services and higher education facilities, and other government buildings, which include new construction, remodeling, alterations, and major repairs;
• Assigns work to subordinates, observes work in progress, providing assistance and technical advice as needed in the solution of unusual or complex problems;
• Reviews finished work for architectural design values, technical adequacy and conformance to departmental objectives; reviews completed plans and specifications prepared by contractors for compliance with building, plumbing and electrical codes, and with fire and health regulations;
• Inspects construction and architectural work done by contractors to insure compliance with designs, plans, specifications, and contract agreements; confers with engineers engaged in the preparation of structural, electrical and mechanical plans;
• Makes recommendations and suggests changes in materials and construction, and makes necessary adjustments in architectural designs to fit structural, electrical and mechanical requirements; interprets building code requirements;
• May recommend building sites and types of buildings best suited for the intended purpose.

Minimum Qualifications

Education: Graduation from an accredited school or college of architecture or engineering, with a degree in architecture or architectural engineering. Four years of successful and progressive experience in architecture may substitute for graduation if it demonstrates thorough knowledge of the fundamental principles and theories of professional architecture.

Experience: Progressively responsible experience as described below:

• Architect IV: 3 years’ experience, 0 years supervisory, 0 years administrative, total 3 years
• Architect V: 4 years’ experience, 0 years administrative. Supervisory potential may be acceptable

Professional architectural experience includes planning and preparing complete designs, drawings, specifications and estimates for buildings and structures. The following types of experience are NOT considered professional architectural experience:

• Routine drafting or development of plans where no original investigations or designs are involved.
• Artistic or illustrative activities in drawing, inking, lettering or coloring for publication.
• Landscape architectural work focusing on land/landscape design and maintenance.
• City or community planning related to social and economic development of community services.
• Structural engineering experience per se.
• Inspection and field supervision of engineering projects.
• Design, fabrication, testing, operation, installation or maintenance of electrical, mechanical, communication, heating, ventilation or related equipment.
• Repair of ship hulls or superstructures.
• Engineering experience limited to preparation of contract specifications or cost estimating.

Licensing and Other Requirements

Professional Architect License: Must possess a Hawaii State Certificate of Registration as professional architect.

Driver’s License: Must have a current, valid driver’s license.

Tests: Candidates lacking a bachelor’s degree in architecture or architectural engineering, but meeting substitution qualifications, may be required to take a written test on architectural sciences and techniques.
