Duties Summary

Architects in state government are primarily responsible for planning and designing new construction, and for the alteration, rehabilitation or restoration of existing buildings and facilities such as public schools, health, social services and higher education facilities and general government buildings.

Architect Level IV Responsibilities

Performs professional architectural work in developing designs, plans, specifications, estimates and reports for all types of public buildings and structures; may supervise lower‑level architects and draftsmen on complex projects; and performs other duties as required.

Architect Level V Responsibilities

Performs difficult and responsible professional architectural work preparing and/or supervising the preparation of architectural designs, plans, specifications, estimates, and reports; and performs other duties as required.

Minimum Qualification Requirements
  • Legal Authorization to Work: Citizens, nationals, permanent resident aliens, or eligible under federal law for unrestricted employment in the United States.
  • Professional License: Valid State of Hawaii Professional Architect license at the time of application.
  • Education: Bachelor’s degree in architecture or architectural engineering from an accredited university.
  • Architectural Experience: Professional architectural work experience in developing and preparing complete designs, drawings, specifications, estimates of buildings, structure, and installations.
  • Level IV: Three (3) years of work experience performing journeyman‑level architect, including full range of professional architectural activity, responsibility for major and complex projects, under general supervision of higher‑level architect or engineer.
  • Level V: Four (4) years of professional work experience, performing difficult and responsible professional architectural work, including preparation and/or supervision of designs, plans, specifications, estimates, and reports; at least one (1) year of experience comparable to Architect IV level in state service as a licensed professional.
  • Supervisory Aptitude (for Level V): Demonstrated aptitude or potential for performance of supervisory duties through successful completion of assignments involving supervisory responsibilities or relevant training.
  • Driver’s License: Valid driver’s license required for some positions; the immediate vacancy requires this.
