Job summary

The City of Syracuse is seeking a professional architect to perform architectural work of limited scope on small-scale building projects. You will prepare drawings, estimate costs, and coordinate drawings for mechanical and electrical systems under supervision.

Qualifications include a B.Arch or equivalent combination with several years of related experience; ability to produce working drawings and read plans; and strong written and verbal communication.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in architecture from a regionally accredited or NYS registered college/university.
• Associates degree in architectural technology with two years of work experience in architectural drafting or related field.
• Four years of work experience in architectural design and planning.
• Equivalent combination of training and experience as defined by (A)-(C).
• Note: at least two years of educational training or work experience in architectural design and composition is required.

Responsibilities

• Prepare preliminary architectural drawings per requirements indicating project scope.
• Estimate probable cost and construction time based on quantities and current market data.
• Create working drawings with plans, elevations, sections and details.
• Review change orders affecting drawings during construction.
• Attend final inspections to ensure compliance with drawings and specs.

Job Description

The work involves responsibility for performing professional architectural work of limited scope in the planning and design of buildings and facilities. An employee in this class performs recurring work of limited scope in the planning and design of small scale projects in terms of such factors as size, cost, coordination of mechanical and electrical elements and design requirements or, as a member of a team, a phase of a larger project. The nature of the work requires the application of conventional architectural techniques. General supervision is received from a technical supervisor or department administrator. Does related work as required.

Typical Work Activities

• Prepares preliminary architectural drawings pursuant to statement of requirements that indicates the nature and scope of the project.
• May compute probable cost and construction time required based upon estimates of quantities of materials and labor required, experience on past projects, and knowledge of current building market.
• Prepares preliminary drawings where necessary, showing general characteristics of the structure and proposed design solutions, as well as preliminary cost estimate for project completion.
• Prepares working drawings translating project scope into plans, elevations, sections and details showing design, location, and dimensions of various structural elements.
• Reviews change order requests involving revisions to the architectural plan during construction stages of the project.
• May attend final inspection of the project after completion to insure compliance with drawings and specifications.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

• Working knowledge of the principles, practices, and techniques of architecture.
• Working knowledge of construction methods, functions and physical properties of building materials and building costs.
• Working knowledge of structural, electrical, and mechanical engineering as related to building construction.
• Working knowledge of applicable, codes, laws, rules and standards regulating the design and construction of buildings.
• Skill in creating architectural drawings and design.
• Ability to express ideas orally and in writing.
• Physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.

Minimum Qualifications

• A) Graduation from a regionally accredited or New York State registered college or university with a baccalaureate degree in architecture; or,
• B) Graduation from a regionally accredited or New York State registered college or university with an associates degree in architectural technology and two (2) years of work experience, or its part-time equivalent, as an architectural technician or in an architectural drafting position in an architect's office or similar setting; or in construction management performing duties such as preparing specifications and cost and time estimations, interpreting building blueprints and developing drawings involving the design or revision of architectural plans during construction; or,
• C) Four (4) years of work experience, or its part time equivalent, in architectural design and planning relating to building structures (i.e. space design, plans, elevations, sections and details) involving the development of design from conceptual drawings to the design format used in the production of construction documents; or,
• D) An equivalent combination of training and experience as defined by the limits of (A), (B) and (C).

Note: In all cases, candidates must show at least two (2) years of educational training or work experience involving architectural design and composition in architectural media, inclusive of architectural drafting and working drawings.
