Job summary

Stantec is seeking an Archaeology Field Lead to direct field activities across multiple states, including Texas, Oklahoma, and Louisiana. You will supervise crews, apply survey, testing, and excavation methods, and ensure data quality in NEPA/Section 106 projects.

This role requires outdoor work in remote locations, strong safety awareness, and the ability to travel extensively; may involve long periods in the field and coordinating with property owners.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in archaeology/anthropology or closely related field.
  • At least 1 season or a field school.
  • At least 3 years supervisory field experience.
  • Archaeological field experience in Texas and the Western Gulf region is a plus.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee and lead archaeological crews during surveys, testing, and excavation projects.
  • Utilize field methodologies including survey, testing, excavation, surface collection, and monitoring.
  • Lead the collection, recording, analysis, and interpretation of archaeological data in the field.
  • Record and evaluate soils using color, texture, and inclusions; navigate using maps, GPS, and imagery.
  • Assist with setting up a site grid, datum, and excavation units; map site plans and tests.
  • Identify historic and prehistoric artifacts following standard procedures.
  • Identify cultural features.
  • Prepare site surfaces for mapping and photography.
  • Assist with laboratory reporting, as needed.
  • Coordinate property entry with right of way agents and/or property owners.
  • Time in the field is anticipated to be 80% or more.

Your Opportunity

Stantec, is currently seeking an Archaeology Field Lead, based in Texas, Oklahoma, or Louisiana, to direct field activities. Our team provides Section 106/NEPA analysis, technical studies, and project permitting for a wide variety of private and federal, state, and local government clients in Texas, Louisiana, Oklahoma, and the surrounding region.

This position requires the ability to work outdoors in remote locations for extended periods in all weather conditions, often traversing rugged terrain, and consistent adherence to workplace safety requirements. Must be able to work independently when conditions are appropriate or with limited supervision.

Your Key Responsibilities
  • Oversee and lead archaeological crews during archaeological surveys, testing, and excavation projects.

  • Utilize a variety of field methodologies, including archaeological survey, testing, excavation, surface collection, and monitoring.

  • Lead the collection, recording, analysis, and interpretation of archaeological data in the field.

  • Record and evaluate soils using color (Munsell), texture, and inclusions; navigate using a compass, USGS topographic maps, plan maps, GPS units, tablets, and aerial photography.

  • Assist with setting up a site grid, datum, and excavations units; Mapping site plans and individual shovel tests, units, and features in plan and profile.

  • Identify historic and prehistoric artifacts following standard collection procedures.

  • Identify cultural features.

  • Clean and prepare site surfaces for mapping and photography.

  • Assist with laboratory reporting, as needed.

  • May need to coordinate property entry with right of way agents and/or property owners.

  • Time in the field is anticipated to be 80% or more.

Your Capabilities and Credentials
  • Experience using GPS, ArcGIS Online, Survey 123, and similar programs a plus.

  • Experience recording field data on tablets is preferred.

  • Knowledge of Phase I, II, and III archaeological excavations/assessments required.

  • Ability and willingness to work extended hours outdoors in varied weather conditions and rugged terrain.

  • Ability to walk to carry equipment and supplies weighing up to 40 pounds is required.

  • Initiative driven work ethic.

  • Strong people skills and ability to deal with variety of personalities and people.

  • Industry-specific safety training certificates is an asset.

  • Requires valid driver’s license and good driving record.

  • Prior to employment with Stantec this position will require the successful completion of a background check; drug and alcohol screening may be required by certain clients on a project-specific basis.

  • Extensive travel required.

Education and Experience
  • A bachelor's degree in archaeology/anthropology or closely related field.

  • At least 1 season or a field school.

  • At least 3 years supervisory field experience.

  • Archaeological field experience in Texas and the Western Gulf region a plus.

TYPICAL PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORK ENVIRONMENT:
  • Frequently required to stand, walk, use hand and fingers, climb, balance, bend, stoop, kneel or crawl

  • Frequently required to communicate verbally and hear instructions, warnings, and other work-related sounds.

  • Frequently utilize visual acuity and color/depth perception to operate equipment, examine objects and materials (soils, sediments, artifacts, ecofacts), measure/estimate distances, read technical information, and/or use a keyboard.

  • Frequently required to lift/push/carry items

  • Frequently exposed to outside weather conditions (summer heat and humidity, winter cold, etc.) and/or wide ranges of conditions in a short time (e.g., repeatedly moving from outside heat to air-conditioned vehicle interior and vice versa)

  • Occasionally exposed to loud noise (e.g., highway traffic, large earth-moving equipment)

Pay Transparency: In compliance with pay transparency laws, pay ranges are provided for positions in locations where required. Please note, the final agreed upon compensation is based on individual education, qualifications, experience, and work location. At Stantec certain roles are bonus eligible. Actual compensation for part-time roles will be pro-rated based on the agreed number of working hours per week.
