History and Archaeology in Nespelem, WA seeks an Archaeology Tech I to perform cultural resources work focused on cultural plants, traditional properties, archaeology, and collections. The role includes general office duties, fieldwork, and assisting senior staff, with potential independent assignments.

Qualifications

  • Requires a High School Diploma or equivalency and experience comparable to fulfill the functions of the position.
  • Any experience in Anthropology, Native American Studies, Botany/Plant Ecology, or Museology/Collection Management or closely related field preferred.
  • Requires a valid driver’s license and meet insurability requirements.
  • Willingness to become a certified boat operator for fieldwork.
  • Must be able to learn Tribal and agency rules and policies.
  • Ability to work with tribal elders and/or traditional practitioners in a respectful manner.

CLOSING DATE: October 2nd, 2026POSITION: Archaeology Tech ISALARY: $20.55-$23.82, per hourREPORTS TO: Program ManagerLOCATION: History and Archaeology, Nespelem, WABasic Functions: This is a Non-Exempt position. Traditional Cultural Plants Archaeology Technician I will perform cultural resources work focusing on cultural plants, traditional properties, archaeology, and collections. The job functions will vary between general office work, field work, assisting senior staff and/or working independently.Position is contracted funded - no guarantee of continued employment should funding cease.BENEFITS: We have excellent benefits including full Medical, Dental, Vision, Life, 401k with employer contributions, Short-and Long- Term disability for Full-Time employees. Generous leave package includes paid holidays, sick leave, and annual leave for Full-Time and Part-Time employees.MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:Education and Training:Requires a High School Diploma or equivalency and experience comparable to fulfill the functions of the position. Willingness to become a certified boat operator for fieldwork.Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:Requires knowledge of CCT history, culture, legends, and traditions of the 12 constituent tribes.Requires the knowledge of equipment such as: fax, copier, scanner, digital photo and video, etc.Requires knowledge in the use of Microsoft Office Programs- Word, Access, and Excel. Must possess the ability to utilize patience and respect in dealing with tribal elders and /or traditional practitioners.Requires closely related experience demonstrating the ability to perform the duties of the position.Requires the ability to work with tribal elders and/or tribal practitioners.Requires the ability to perform all of the duties of the position in a high volume environment that may be dominated by distractions.Requires to be able to learn, understand and apply Tribal and agency rules, regulations and policies.Requires the ability to plan, organize and prioritize work in order to meet schedules and timelines.Requires the ability to use a personal computer to produce correspondence, informational materials, and conduct basic research.Requires the ability to maintain strict confidentiality of private and sensitive information.Requires the ability to be willing to learn field techniques associated with survey, excavation, and preparation of paperwork (preferred) and use of hand tools (e.g., shovels, trowels, hatchet, clippers).Requires willingness to learn oral history, cultural plant, or collections techniques.Requires willingness to work on tedious tasks such as photocopying documents.Requires a dependable and punctual work history.Requires the ability to work independently after initial training development.Requires the ability to multi-task while working under and meeting deadlines.Requires the ability to maintain good judgement and common sense.Must work well with others.Note: Pursuant to Tribal Policy, if this position is safety sensitive it is subject to pre-employment drug testing. In addition, this position is subject to reasonable suspicion and post-accident drug testing.TRIBAL MEMBER AND INDIAN PREFERENCE WILL APPLY; PREFERENCE WILL ALSO BE GIVEN TO HONORABLY DISCHARGED VETERANS WHO ARE MINIMALLY QUALIFIED.If required of this position, you must possess and maintain a valid Washington State driver’s license and be eligible for the Tribes’ Vehicle Insurance. In addition, this position may be subject to pre-employment background clearances.
