Job summary

WestLand is seeking a full-time Archaeology Field Director to join our Cultural Resources team in New Mexico. The role involves leading archaeological fieldwork, supervising crews, and ensuring documentation and reporting meet regulatory standards.

Per diem and single-occupancy lodging are provided for out-of-town projects. Ideal candidates have a graduate degree in Archaeology or Anthropology, or an undergraduate degree with substantial relevant experience, plus two years of supervisory work in

WestLand is seeking a full-time Archaeology Field Director to join our Cultural Resources team in New Mexico. The ideal candidate will have expertise in local and regional cultural history, archaeology, and local, state, and federal statutes governing cultural resource investigations, be permittable by state and federal agencies, and have previous experience leading and supervising field crews. The successful candidate will be responsible for leading teams on archaeological projects across New Mexico and, potentially, neighboring states. For out-of-town projects and longer duration stays, per diem and single-occupancy lodging is provided. The successful candidate will be technically based out of WestLand's Tucson office but may be located remotely in New Mexico.

What will I be doing?

• Leading and coordinating archaeological fieldwork (field survey, testing, monitoring, and data recovery excavations).


• Supervising field crews to record artifacts, map features and sites, create scaled profiles and plans, and be responsible for all paperwork, notes, and records.


• Processing and cataloging artifacts and other materials to lab specifications.


• Filing and scanning records and paperwork.


• Completing record searches and writing technical reports.

What qualifications are required for this role?

• A graduate degree in Archaeology, Anthropology, or related field. An undergraduate degree in Archaeology, Anthropology, or related field AND additional years of experience may substitute for a graduate degree.


• A minimum of two years supervisory experience as a cultural resource professional in the American Southwest.


• Must be listed in the NM SHPO Archaeology Directory as at least a Supervisory Archaeologist/Crew Chief.


• Previous experience working in New Mexico is required.


• Previous experience writing technical archaeological reports.


• Ability to conduct fieldwork for long hours in a desert environment featuring extreme temperatures, rough terrain, and potentially high altitudes.


• Ability to travel for work, often on short notice and for extended periods (paid drive time, per diem and hotel provided).


• Ability to work as a member of a cohesive team.


• Ability to work in a fast-paced and creative environment.

The wage range for this position is $30.00 - $39.00 per hour.
