Position

Colorado State University’s Center for Environmental Management of Military Lands (CEMML) is seeking multiple full-time Archaeologists to support U.S. Army Garrison installations across Oahu (Schofield Barracks) and the Island of Hawaii (Pohakuloa Training Area). These roles offer the opportunity to work in Hawaii’s culturally rich landscapes while contributing to environmental stewardship and cultural resource protection. You will participate in fieldwork, archaeological surveys, cultural monitoring, data collection, and project coordination, collaborating with Cultural Resource Managers and project leadership. This is meaningful work with real impact on cultural preservation, environmental compliance, and long-term resource sustainability.

Location

U.S. Army Garrison, Hawaii. Installations include Fort Shafter, Schofield Barracks, Wheeler Army Airfield, Tripler Army Medical Center, Makua Military Reservation, Pohakuloa Training Area, Kahuku Training Area, and other satellite sites.

Position Summary

• Support cultural resource fieldwork, monitoring, surveys, and site documentation
• Supervise field technicians or archaeologists (as assigned)
• Coordinate scheduling with Army, federal, state, and contracted partners
• Maintain compliance with federal and state cultural preservation laws
• Participate in public outreach
• Conduct work in rugged environments, including areas with UXO under EOD supervision
• Potentially work in subterranean environments (lava tubes)
• Operate 4x4 vehicles over difficult terrain
• Hike long distances at high elevations (5,000–10,000 ft.)
• Use GIS/GPS for mapping, recording, and resource management
• Assist with data entry, organization, and technical documentation

Required Qualifications

Level I & II

• BS/BA degree in Anthropology, Archaeology, or related field
• 1+ year of post-graduate professional archaeological experience
• Experience in:
  • Pedestrian survey
  • Mapping & site recording
  • National Register test excavations
• GIS & GPS experience
• Strong written communication skills
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office
• CPR/First Aid certification (or obtained within 3 months)
• Valid driver’s license by start date
• Ability to work in demanding field conditions
• Must be legally authorized to work in the U.S.
• Ability to hike up to 10 miles/day and lift 25 lbs.

Preferred Qualifications

Level I Preferred

• 2+ years professional experience
• Knowledge of federal preservation laws (NHPA, etc.)
• Experience working in the Pacific region/Hawaii
• Technical report writing skills

Level II Preferred

• MS/MA in Anthropology, Archaeology, Historic Preservation, or related field
• 3+ years professional archaeological experience
• Experience as Crew Chief or Field Supervisor
• Strong familiarity with NHPA, NEPA, Section 106/110 processes
• Experience with DoD cultural resource issues and compliance
• Pacific/Hawaii field experience
• Advanced report writing and organizational skills
