Qualifications

• Determines whether office review is adequate or if field reconnaissance/survey is necessary.
• Makes recommendations for cultural resource clearance.

Responsibilities

• Assists in archaeological reconnaissance to identify archaeological resources that could potentially be impacted by proposed actions.
• Assists in stratifying project or activity areas into sampling units, both horizontally on the ground surface and vertically through subterranean testing.
• Assists in laboratory analysis and evaluation of archaeological specimens recovered from reconnaissance.
• Uses resultant data to prepare archaeological reports.

• Anthropology (Prehistory specialization) or equivalent

• This is the entry-level position for an Archaeologist.
• Developmental assignments are made to familiarize the incumbent with Section 26A of the Act and land use actions.
• Progressively more difficult assignments will be made, leading to the competency required for an Archaeologist, Senior.
• Determines whether office review is adequate or if field reconnaissance/survey is necessary.
• Makes recommendations for cultural resource clearance.
• Assists in archaeological reconnaissance to identify archaeological resources that could potentially be impacted by proposed actions.
• Assists in stratifying project or activity areas into sampling units, both:
  • Horizontally on the ground surface
  • Vertically through subterranean testing
• Assists in laboratory analysis and evaluation of archaeological specimens recovered from reconnaissance.
• Uses resultant data to prepare archaeological reports.
• Laboratory analysis and evaluation involves:
  • Identification of archaeological specimens
  • Classification of specimens
  • Determining how archaeological specimens were used
  • Applies deduction to produce anthropological data.
• Uses the resultant data in the preparation of archaeological reports.
