Archaeologist
Job Summary

The Archaeologist is responsible for conducting archaeological and cultural resource investigations in support of infrastructure and development projects. This role ensures compliance with applicable historic preservation regulations through surveys, monitoring, documentation, data recovery, and coordination with regulatory agencies. The position supports the identification, preservation, and management of historic and culturally significant resources.

Key Responsibilities
Archaeological Surveys and Investigations
  • Conduct archaeological and cultural resource surveys related to infrastructure and development projects.
  • Identify, document, evaluate, and assess historic and culturally significant sites.
  • Perform subsurface testing to determine the nature and extent of buried cultural deposits.
  • Conduct archaeological monitoring for ongoing construction and infrastructure projects.
  • Carry out data recovery activities and mitigation measures for various projects.
  • Wash, process, catalog, and prepare artifacts for curation.
Documentation and Reporting
  • Produce, compile, and maintain written, photographic, drawn records, and electronic databases.
  • Complete required archaeological documentation forms and regulatory submissions.
  • Collect, analyze, interpret, and model archaeological data.
  • Prepare technical reports, research designs, work plans, mitigation strategies, and regulatory correspondence.
  • Update and maintain GIS data and prepare project-related maps.
Regulatory Compliance and Coordination
  • Coordinate with historic preservation and regulatory agencies to ensure compliance with applicable local and federal regulations.
  • Assess project plans and evaluate potential impacts on cultural and historic resources.
  • Participate in project meetings with permitting agencies, contractors, and stakeholders.
  • Advise contractors and land users regarding potential impacts to properties of historical or cultural significance.
  • Assist in evaluating and nominating eligible properties for inclusion in historic preservation registers and programs.

Qualifications
Education and Experience
  • Bachelor's Degree in Anthropology, Archaeology, or a related field.
  • Minimum of two (2) years of professional experience in field archaeology, scientific data collection and analysis, and technical report writing.
  • Equivalent combinations of education and experience may be considered.
Knowledge Of
  • Federal, state, territorial, and local laws, regulations, codes, and ordinances related to historic preservation and archaeology.
  • Surveying methods and techniques.
  • Engineering and construction principles and practices.
  • Mathematical and statistical concepts.
  • Data collection and analysis techniques.
  • Safety principles and modern office technologies.
  • GIS mapping and archaeological documentation practices.
Skills and Abilities
  • Interpret and apply laws, regulations, and standards.
  • Read and interpret maps, plans, specifications, and technical documentation.
  • Conduct field surveys, inspections, and inventories.
  • Analyze information and develop practical solutions.
  • Prepare technical reports and project documentation.
  • Utilize GIS software and other computer applications.
  • Perform mathematical calculations and resource estimations.
  • Communicate effectively with coworkers, contractors, regulatory agencies, and the public.
  • Apply safe work practices and maintain professional standards.
Licenses and Certifications
  • Valid Driver's License with the appropriate class required.
