Job summary

The North Carolina Zoo, a division of the North Carolina Department of Natural and Cultural Resources (DNCR), seeks a Grounds Worker II to maintain grounds, trees, and landscapes across grounds, habitats, and off-site locations. The role involves climbing trees, operating equipment, and assisting with projects.

Applicants should have a high school diploma or GED plus two years of horticultural experience, or an associate degree in a related field. A valid US driver’s license is required.

Qualifications

• Minimum education: High School diploma or GED and two years of progressive horticultural experience; or Associate's degree in related field; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
• Experience with landscape installation and maintenance procedures.
• Knowledge of tree identification, health, and maintenance.
• Experience with operation of light/heavy equipment and safety protocols.

Responsibilities

• Maintain the zoo's tree collection and grounds daily, including animal habitats and off-site locations.
• Operate exterior landscape equipment and manage basic projects and record keeping.
• Interact with guests to provide information about the tree collection and landscape features.
