Job summary

The City of Somerville is seeking a Tree Surgeon/Special Heavy Motor Equipment Operator/Public Works Laborer to maintain and care for trees and shrubbery. Responsibilities include climbing, trimming, removing hazardous trees, operating bucket trucks, and performing heavy equipment tasks in all weather conditions.

Candidate must have relevant arboriculture education or equivalent experience, a valid MA CDL B license, and be able to work extended hours, including emergencies.

Qualifications

• Associate degree in arboriculture or related field with 2+ years’ tree work experience.
• Or high school diploma with 4+ years’ tree care experience; preference for crew member.
• ISA Tree Worker Aerial Lift Specialist preferred; must obtain within 12 months.
• CPR/first aid training preferred; ability to follow safety instructions.

Responsibilities

• Climb trees and perform limb trimming, shaping and cutting work.
• Remove hazardous trees, grind stumps and perform related maintenance.
• Operate power saws, bucket trucks and other equipment safely.
• Load/unload trucks, haul material, plow/sand highways, and maintain tools.
• Work extended hours and respond to emergency tree hazards as needed.
• Follow ANSI Z133 standards and ensure public safety.
