Job description

Operate as an active crew member, performing all aspects of tree pruning and removal services in a safe and skillful manner. Assist with other projects as deemed necessary.

  • Properly inspect, maintain and operate all tree trimming and removal tools, and equipment including chainsaws, chippers, aerial lifts, etc.
  • Use equipment from the bucket truck at various heights and angles.
  • Lift heavy tree limbs and haul heavy materials. Work long periods of time in awkward positions, including stooping.
  • Assist with performing maintenance worker duties including mowing, using Bobcat or hand digging for grade adjustments, preparing areas for removal or planting of trees, shrubs, annuals, sod, rock decoration and irrigation work.
  • Assist with miscellaneous projects associated with special events, hanging up decorations, replacing light bulbs in parks, driving vehicles to auction and any other projects deemed necessary by the supervisor.
  • Ensure proper traffic control in congested traffic situations to include: barricades, safety cones and signage per Temporary Traffic Control (TTC) guidelines.
  • Drive to and from various City work sites.
  • Assist with Department of Leisure Services projects as assigned. Perform additional duties as assigned. Be available for emergency call-outs.
  • In the event of an emergency, all employees are considered essential and may be required to perform duties outside of their normal job description.
  • Complete required trainings as specified within the City Comprehensive Emergency Management Plan.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Six (6) months experience in urban tree maintenance, pruning and large tree removal.
  • Valid Class E driver license. Must obtain state of Florida Class E driver license within thirty (30) days of employment.

PREFERABLE QUALIFICATIONS:

  • High school diploma or G.E.D.
  • FDOT TTC/MOT Intermediate Certification – Must obtain within three (3) months of employment.

Arbor Technician I:

  • Three (3) months experience and obtain the FDOT TTC/MOT Intermediate Certification within three (3) months of employment.

Arbor Technician II:

  • One (1) year experience, FDOT TTC/MOT Intermediate Certification, and a Valid Class “B” Commercial Driver License (CDL) with air brake endorsement.

Arbor Technician III:

  • Two (2) years’ experience, FDOT TTC/MOT Intermediate Certification, a Valid Class “B” Commercial Driver License (CDL), with air brake endorsement and be an International Society of Arboriculture Certified Arborist.

Applicants will be required to complete a Disclosure & Authorization Regarding Background Investigation, a Confidentiality Agreement and a criminal background screening.

Driving history for the past three (3) years must reflect no violations of a driving related felony offense, or driving under the influence (DUI) which includes both drugs and alcohol, reckless driving, or hit and run involving an occupied vehicle or attended property, or an accumulation of traffic violations, plus three (3) points for each attendance at driving school (regardless of whether points were assessed against the license) where the penalty points do not exceed twelve (12).

Position is considered at-risk for exposure to Hepatitis B during performance of regular duties. An acceptance/declination of vaccination form is required.

If selected, an essential functions assessment is required to measure the ability to safely perform the required physical demands.

*NOTE: This position, with a CDL, is covered under the D.O.T. regulations for pre-employment drug testing and pre-employment and annual inquiries through the Clearinghouse.
