Job summary

The University of Minnesota Arboretum is seeking a part-time Safety and Security staff member to provide centralized security, guest assistance, and incident response. You will support daily operations, enforce safety protocols, and coordinate law enforcement for events on site.

Responsibilities include visitor assistance, building and grounds inspections, and collaboration with multiple departments to ensure safe, welcoming environments for guests and staff.

Qualifications

• High School graduate or equivalent with 2 years operations experience.
• Follow oral and written instructions.
• Must have a valid Minnesota driver's license.
• Experience in safety operations in a public setting.
• Current CPR, First Aid, and Defibrillator certification or ability to obtain within six months.
• Excellent customer service and ability to interact with guests of all ages.
• Must be able to stand for up to 4 hours.

• Conduct daily inspections of buildings, grounds, and road facilities to identify hazards and report to staff or authorities.
• Serve as a friendly, visible presence onsite, inform visitors of Arboretum etiquette, and assist with inquiries.
• Respond to general calls for service, access locked buildings, assist staff and visitors, and provide escorts.
• Coordinate all outside contracting/scheduling of Law Enforcement Officers for events and daily activities onsite.
• Coordinate law enforcement or first responders when needed for emergencies; report incidents or property damage.

As a member of the University of Minnesota Landscape Arboretum Safety and Security Program, the Safety and Security staff are responsible for facilitating a centralized service to the Arboretum Community. The mission of the unit is to provide exceptional customer service and a safe environment. The program prioritizes the well-being of Arboretum guests and staff by implementing safety protocols that take into consideration inclement weather, building and grounds-related incidents, and crowd control. The unit operates with the utmost professionalism while fostering a workplace environment committed to principles and practices of respect, diversity, inclusivity, continuous improvement, and teamwork.

The Arboretum welcomes visitors 7 days a week and has seasonal shifts in visitation; to meet business needs, Saturday and Sundays 9:00am - 5:30pm with occasional flexibility or additional hours or work days during peak times or when coverage is needed.

85% Campus Safety and Security Program Deployment

• Conduct daily check-ins with staff on duty at visitor center, grounds, and HRC
• Conduct daily inspections of multiple buildings, grounds, and road facilities to identify and report potential hazards or emergencies to appropriate staff and or authorities.
• Serve as a friendly, visible presence onsite, informing visitors of Arboretum etiquette, and assists with visitor inquiries related to wayfinding and general questions.
• Respond to general calls for service, such as accessing locked buildings, assisting staff and visitors, and providing escorts.
• Coordinate all outside contracting/scheduling of Law Enforcement Officers for special events and day-to-day activities onsite.
• Coordinate law enforcement or first responders when needed for emergency/medical response onsite; report incidents or damage to property.

15% Safety, Compliance, Operational Support and Interdepartmental Collaboration

• Work in collaboration with a variety of departments to manage parking and signage for daily operational needs
• Support staff with procedures to facilitate and oversee end-of-day closing activities of Gardens and Grounds
• Assist in maintaining electronic surveillance, automated security systems, and employment identification card systems

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

• High School graduate or equivalent education and 2 years operations experience.
• Must be able to follow oral and written instructions
• Must have a valid Minnesota driver's licenses
• Previous experience in safety operations within a public setting
• Current CPR, First Aid, and Defibrillator certification or the ability to obtain within the first six months of employment.
• Excellent customer service skills and the ability to interact with guests of all ages, ethnicities and socioeconomic groups.
• Requires the ability to stand for up to 4 hours on a continuous basis.

• Exhibits the skills to manage complaints and use mediation and negotiation skills
• Ability to build strong relationships at all levels; develop a full understanding of Arboretum Safety practices and communicate them effectively
• Team coordination and leadership skills
• Documentation management and ability to use incident reporting tools

• Good written and oral communication skills

Pay and Benefits

Pay Range: $20.00; depending on education/qualifications/experience.
