Summary

The Unconventional (TU) seeks a qualified Translator to support the Department of Justice (DOJ) with Translation, Interpretation, Transcription, and other Linguistic Support Services (LSS). Activities include translating diverse documents (written, electronic, video, audio) with legal, business, public, medical, scientific, financial, and military terminology. Materials are legal in nature and may be provided in various formats, requiring strict confidentiality. Specialized terminology varies across subject areas such as chemical lab reports, bank statements, medical reports, and law enforcement documents. The translator’s work must preserve tone, register, and accuracy, adhering to the code of linguist ethics.

Job Requirements
Required Qualifications
  • Minimum of two (2) years of experience in translation.
  • ILR 3 minimum or equivalent on language/translation tests.
  • Must have lived 3 of the last 5 years in the U.S. (not necessarily consecutive).
  • At least 1 year of experience working with a law enforcement and/or legal department.
  • U.S. citizenship.
  • Fluent knowledge of both English and the foreign language, including formal, legal, diplomatic, consultative, casual, colloquial, and regional terminology.
  • Expertise in specialized vocabulary, research, and analytical skills for critical terminology judgments.
  • Professional command of the non-native language while writing fluently in the native language.
  • Accurate translation with no changes, omissions, or additions.
  • Preserve tone and register of source materials.
  • Adherence to relevant code of linguist ethics.
  • Proficiency in Computer-Assisted Translation (CAT) tools, especially SDL Trados Studio.
  • Clearance: Active Public Trust or higher security clearance.
  • Location: Remote / National Capitol Region / Various CONUS Locations.
  • Travel: Some travel may be required.
