Job summary

City of San Diego is seeking an Aquatics Technician II to inspect, maintain, and repair aquatic equipment and facilities across Citywide fountains, pools, and water features. The role covers system design, renovation, and plumbing work, with emphasis on water quality and safety compliance.

The position requires a CPO or AFO certification at hire and two years of relevant mechanical experience, including pumps and filtration systems. Night shifts, overtime, and standby duties may apply.

Qualifications

  • Two years of full-time experience maintaining and repairing mechanical equipment, including pumps, valves, filters, piping systems, and chemical systems at large commercial aquatic facilities.
  • At least one year of full-time experience in the repair, renovation, and/or modification of pumping, circulation, and filtration systems.
  • A valid Certified Pool Operator (CPO) or Aquatic Facility Operator certification is required at the time of hire.

Responsibilities

  • Test and maintain water quality as required by health codes and safety standards.

  • Install and maintain bulk chemical storage tanks; use power tools for fabrication of fittings; perform other duties as assigned.

Aquatics Technician II positions inspect, maintain, and perform complex repairs of aquatic equipment and facilities including motors and pumps at various Citywide fountains, water features, and swimming pools; design, renovate and construct aquatic facility systems including circulation, filtration, and plumbing systems; repair, inspect, and test chemical control and feed systems; install and maintain bulk chemical storage tanks; use power tools for fabrication of custom fittings; test and maintain water quality as required by health codes and safety standards; keep logs, maintain records, and generate reports; maintain inventory of equipment; determine maintenance schedules for equipment; and perform other duties as assigned.

Notes
  • Employees in job classifications represented by AFSME Local 127 are scheduled to receive the following general wage increases:
    • 3.5% effective 7/1/27
    • 2% effective 7/1/28
    • 2% effective 1/1/29
  • In addition to the scheduled general wage increases, the following equity adjustment wage increase is also scheduled to take effect for Aquatics Technician II: 5% effective 1/1/29.
  • Eligible benefited employees originally hired on or after July 10, 2021, will be automatically enrolled in the San Diego City Employees Retirement System (SDCERS).
  • Aquatics Technician II employees may be required to work nights, unusual shifts, overtime, and on standby (Emergency Call Out) for which they may receive additional pay. Standby may be required.
  • Aquatics Technician II employees are required to work in confined spaces such as equipment vaults, surge tanks, and sump pits wearing full face respirators, splash guard suits, and boots; lift items weighing up to 100 pounds; utilize hoisting equipment; and may be required to work overtime.
  • Aquatics Technician II positions are required to pass a medical physical, respiratory fit test, and obtain Confined Space Certification at the time of hire. Employees will be required to obtain and maintain Confined Space Certification to retain employment.
Minimum Requirements

You must meet the following requirements on the date you apply, unless otherwise indicated.

Experience: Two years of full-time experience maintaining and repairing mechanical equipment, including pumps, valves, filters, piping systems, and chemical systems at large commercial aquatic facilities. Qualifying experience MUST include one year of full-time experience in the repair, renovation, and/or modification of pumping, circulation, and filtration systems.

  • City of San Diego employees using Out-of-Class Assignment (OCA) experience to qualify must submit written documentation signed by their appointing authority or payroll specialist, detailing the work performed, dates, and total number of qualifying OCA hours. OCA experience without the required documentation will NOT be considered.

Certificates: A valid Certified Pool Operator (CPO) or Aquatic Facility Operator certification (AFO) is required at the time of hire.
