The Rockaway YMCA is seeking an Aquatics Supervisor to maintain safe conditions in and around the branch's swim area. The role includes lifeguarding, swim instruction, on‑deck supervision, recordkeeping, and support for the Aquatics Director.
Pay: $25.00 per hour (June 13 – September 4 2026). Required certifications will be earned within 90–120 days of hire.
Key Responsibilities
- Be Rescue Ready: wear uniform, pocket face mask/gloves, whistle, and rescue tube.
- Conduct continuous and active scanning of the pool during all swim hours.
- Be Instructor Ready: wear uniform, prepare lesson plans, maintain attendance records, and complete end‑of‑session reports.
- Instruct participants in accordance with YMCA Aquatics program standards, incorporating all five components and guided discovery.
- Ensure instructional equipment remains in good condition and is ready for each class.
- Attend mandatory in‑service training on a monthly basis.
- Obtain and maintain YMCA Lifeguard and Swim Lesson Instructor certifications within 90 and 120 days of hire, respectively.
- Know and understand the Emergency Action Plan and Emergency Evacuation Routes.
- Enforce aquatics safety rules consistently and fairly.
- Maintain positive relationships with participants, parents/guardians, non‑class members, and staff.
- Assist the Aquatics Director with office duties, including message handling, program and staff scheduling, class ratio maintenance, and shift coverage.
- Be punctual for all shifts.
- Support fundraising and program events as needed.
- Follow directions of the YMCA Aquatics Director in accordance with YMCA Aquatic Standards.
Desired Skills & Experience
- High School Diploma or equivalent required.
- Minimum age 18 years.
- Current YMCA Lifeguard certification or equivalent required.
- Current YMCA Swim Lessons Instructor certification or equivalent required.
- Current CPRO, First Aid, and Emergency Oxygen certifications required.
- Demonstrate proficiency in swim strokes, lifeguard rescues, and CPRO/FA/EO skills.
- Maintain certification‑level physical and mental readiness; responsible for recertification before expiration.
- Willingness to work flexible hours, including weekends and holidays.
