Job summary

The YMCA of Greater New York is seeking Lifeguards to maintain safe conditions around the pool area and promote a positive, inclusive atmosphere in line with YMCA policies.

You'll patrol the water, enforce rules, attend monthly in-service training, and complete required certifications within the specified timelines. The role requires flexibility, weekend and holiday availability, and a commitment to exceptional member service.

Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or equivalent desirable.
  • Must be at least 16 years of age; 16–17 must comply with NYS working hours.
  • Current YMCA Lifeguard certification or equivalent required.
  • Current Basic Life Support, First Aid, and Emergency Oxygen certifications required.
  • Demonstrate swim strokes, lifeguard rescues, and BLS/BFA/EO skills.

Responsibilities

  • Must be Rescue Ready: uniform, pocket face mask/gloves, whistle, and rescue tube.
  • Continuous and active scanning of the pool.
  • Attend mandatory in-service training on a monthly basis.
  • Know and understand the Emergency Action Plan and Emergency Evacuation Routes.
  • Enforce aquatics safety rules consistently and fairly.
  • When not lifeguarding, perform secondary duties as requested, such as cleaning/sorting aquatics equipment, testing chemicals, tidying the pool deck, and/or assisting instructors.
  • Maintain positive relationships with members and staff. Show members and colleagues respect by listening carefully and showing empathy when dealing with difficult situations.
  • Follow the directions of the YMCA of Greater New York Aquatic Supervisors, in accordance with YMCA Aquatic Standards.
  • Must attain YMCA Lifeguard certification within 90 days of hire and YMCA Swim Lesson Instructor certification within 120 days of hire.
  • Maintain certification-level physical and mental readiness. Responsible for recertification before expiration.
  • Actively participate in training sessions, designated meetings, and special events.

The Dodge YMCA is seeking Lifeguards who will be responsible for maintaining safe conditions in and around the branch’s swim area. The Lifeguards will promote a safe and positive atmosphere in accordance with YMCA aquatics policies and procedures.
