Job summary

YMCA of San Diego County is seeking an Aquatics Coordinator to support the Aquatics Director by maintaining a safe aquatic environment, supervising staff in the absence of the Director, and assisting with administrative duties while delivering swimming lessons and lifeguard services. This full-time role requires a solid background in lifeguarding, multiple certifications, and strong customer service.

Qualifications

• Min. age 18 years.
• 3+ years lifeguard experience.
• Current YMCA Swim Lesson Instructor certification or ARC WSI (within 6 months).
• Current YMCA or ARC Lifeguard Training (within 6 months).
• Lifeguard Instructor certification desirable.
• Current First Aid for Public Safety Personnel from ARC/Heart or S&H Institute.
• Current CPR PRO/AED from ARC/Heart/Institute.
• Current O2 certification from ARC/Heart/Safety Institute.
• CPO certification within 60 days of employment.
• Experience supervising staff.
• Pass written and practical skills prior to duty.

Responsibilities

• Assists Aquatics Director in the administration of the aquatics department, including scheduling of staff to cover all shifts and lessons and returning telephone calls within 24 hours.
• Assists in the implementation of new aquatics programs.
• Resolve problems with members and participants and the facility and report any problems to the Aquatics Director when immediate actions cannot fix the problem.
• Ensure that pump room operations, including chemical levels, water clarity, and chlorine/ acid tanks are at the appropriate levels and standards.
• Maintain proper functioning of pool equipment (certification required).
• Perform chemical tests and maintenance duties as scheduled when not lifeguarding.
• Report any problems/ hazards with facility and staff incidents to Aquatic Director when immediate actions cannot fix the problem.
• Supervise Aquatic Staff, in the absence of the Aquatic Director, to ensure all facility policies are being enforced and observed by staff.
• Assist in the training and development of staff at staff trainings and on the job.
• Practice preventive lifeguard techniques at all times to include: full area view, 180-degree limit, scanning every 5–10 seconds, prompt victim contact, and staying within 2 feet of the pool.
