The City of Raleigh Parks, Recreation and Cultural Resources is hiring Lifeguards (Not Certified) for their Seasonal Aquatic Vocational Education (SAVE) Program. The position offers the opportunity to receive free lifeguarding training while performing paid work hours. Candidates will gain essential skills and be responsible for ensuring safety at aquatic facilities and monitoring participants.
The Lifeguard-Not Certified position is the job title within the COR PRCR Aquatic Program’s SAVE Program. The Seasonal Aquatic Vocational Education (SAVE) Program enables applicants to receive free training/education and then return the payment in the form of hours worked within the aquatic program. Successfully complete the pre-lifeguard water screen test; once enrolled, complete all the requirements of the American Red Cross lifeguarding class; and, as an employee of the City of Raleigh Parks, Recreation and Cultural Resources Department, comply with all the duties of a lifeguard.
Admission Criteria:
1. Complete the online application and submit it.
2. Communicate with the aquatic staff to schedule appointments as directed.
3. Successfully pass the following: You must complete both skills (goggles are allowed for the 200 swim only).
a. Swim 150 yards using freestyle and breaststroke (no stopping; you do not need to perform flip turns), tread water for 2 minutes without using your arms or hands, and finish by swimming 50 yards.
b. Swim 20 yards, dive down to a depth of 10 feet, retrieve a 10-pound diving brick from the bottom of the pool, hold it under your chin with both hands, and using only your legs while on your back, kick back to the starting side. Place the brick on the wall and exit the water in under 1 minute and 40 seconds.
4. Bring identification as directed for the water screening test.
5. Complete the employment paperwork thoroughly and promptly.
6. Pass the background check.
7. Pass the controlled substance test.
8. Successfully complete the requirements for the lifeguard class.
9. Complete 155 hours (paid) of employment within one year from the last day of the lifeguard class as a lifeguard with the City of Raleigh Parks, Recreation and Cultural Resources.
10. If you are unable to complete the 155 hours, remit payment to the City of Raleigh for the cost (resident/non-resident) of the American Red Cross Lifeguarding Class.
Attend monthly in-service trainings at the assigned pool. Participate in all pre-season and orientation trainings. Be punctual for scheduled work attendance.
Be responsible for job performance and work quality.
Communicate effectively with the Pool Managers and Supervisors. Maintain a professional appearance.
Enforce all aquatic facility policies, rules, and regulations.
Inspect the facility daily and report any unsafe conditions or equipment to the supervisor. Complete records and reports.
Exercise regularly to maintain your fitness level (strength and endure).
The employee should: (1) be 15 years old prior to completing the lifeguard class; (2) be timely in completing pre-employment documents and responding to emails and (3) demonstrate adequate swimming and safety skills during the lifeguarding class.
