Job summary

The City of Carlsbad is hiring a part-time year-round Aquatics Instructor to organize, lead, and teach specialized aquatic activities under supervision. Duties include conducting American Red Cross swimming lessons across levels, promoting program participation, and enforcing safety rules.

Qualified applicants must hold a current American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor (WSI) certificate and have experience teaching swimming to various ages; first aid knowledge is a plus.

The Department:

You will join a nationally accredited agency (one of only five agencies in the State of California) by the Commission for the Accreditation of Parks & Recreation Agencies (CAPRA); a team dedicated to upholding the department's mission to promote community health and wellness while building a diverse culture that embraces change and continuous improvement.

Position:

The Aquatics Instructor is a part-time year-round position. Under the supervision of the Aquatic Supervisor and/or Recreation Supervisor, the person in this position will organize, lead and teach specialized aquatic activities and do related work as required.

• Conduct American Red Cross swimming lessons ranging from Parent/Child Aquatics to Learn to Swim Level Six
• Promote participation, provide information on available programs and enforce required safety rules and regulations
• Rescue persons in distress and render first aid
• Assist in conducting special events and maintenance and operation of aquatic facilities

Possess current certificates in the following:

• Must possess a current certificate in American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor (WSI)
• Three monthsofexperience as a swim instructor preferred

Knowledge of:

• Principles and techniques of teaching swim lessons to all ages
• Knowledge of lifeguarding techniques, first aid, and other aquatic instruction
• Must possess a current certificate in American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor (WSI)

Ability to:

• Interact and be patient and professional with the public
• Ability to follow class guidelines and exercises, enforce required safety rules and regulations
• Serve as an ambassador to the Parks & Recreation Department, as well as the City of Carlsbad

Physical/Mental Requirements:

• Ability to sit, stand, walk, kneel, crouch, squat, stoop and reach
• Lift 25 lbs
• Exposure to outdoors; ability to travel to different sites and locations
