Job description

NOTES: This is a seasonal position with no benefits. Spokane County Aquatic Facilities are typically open from mid-June through mid-August, with staff training beginning in late May. All positions require successful clearance of a background check. This recruitment may be used to fill up two (2) vacancies working 35 to 40 hours per week.

HOURLY WAGE: $18.91-$21.41 per hour Depending on Experience.

If a certified American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor (WSI), hourly wage increases $1.00 per hour.

Responsibilities:

  1. Assists in developing and coordinating summer aquatic activities, programs, and promotions for a Spokane County aquatic facility.
  2. Maintains the high standards of Spokane County facilities including cleanliness, maintenance, accountability, and excellent service.
  3. Assists the Aquatics Program Coordinator in hiring, training, and evaluating staff for a specific Spokane County aquatics facility.
  4. Prepares work schedules of part-time, seasonal lifeguards and water safety instructors.
  5. Coordinates with aquatic staff to successfully operate a highly attended aquatic facility during open swimming sessions and special events.
  6. Ensures effective cash handling procedures.
  7. Maintains accurate records and inventory.
  8. Coordinates, promotes, and implements special programs such as Free Swim, facility rentals, and Red Cross Swim Programs.
  9. Coordinates and implements regular maintenance schedules to ensure the cleanliness, safety, and sustainable operation of the aquatic facility.
  10. Develops and mentors staff to proactively address risk management issues.
  11. Inspects sites and provides training and direction as necessary.
  12. Responsible for accident/incident reporting as required.
  13. May serve as, or coordinate closely with, the designated site-specific COVID-19 monitor.

Minimum Requirements:

  • Must be at least 18 years of age.
  • Prior experience as lead lifeguard or assistant manager of an aquatic facility.
  • Physically fit, strong, agile, and dexterous.
  • Excellent leadership, public relations skills, and decision-making ability.
  • Self-confidence and initiative.
  • Professional attitude and appearance.

CERTIFICATIONS:

Required: American Red Cross Lifeguarding with CPR/AED for Professional Rescuers and First Aid certification.

Preferred: American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor (WSI) certification, Lifeguard Instructor Certification, Water Safety Instructor Trainer (WSIT), and Lifeguard Instructor Trainer (LIT).

LICENSES: Must possess a valid driver's license.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS FOR ALL POSITIONS:

All positions require successful clearance of a criminal background check.

WATER SAFETY INSTRUCTOR: While any aquatic facility team member is welcome to become a Water Safety Instructor, certified lifeguards are highly encouraged to assume this role. WSI staff typically have more work hours available to them each week than non-WSI staff, and WSIs earn an additional $1.00/hour for all shifts.

Employees who pursue Red Cross WSI certification may be eligible for educational reimbursement for the WSI course fee.

Considerable Knowledge of:

  • Marketing, promotion, and supervisory principles and practices involved in managing a recreational/aquatics facility.

Ability to:

  • Coordinate special events and operation of an aquatics facility.
  • Effectively plan, direct, motivate, assign, and evaluate the work of employees.
  • Coordinate effectively with maintenance personnel.
  • Communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
  • Maintain accurate records.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships.
  • Lift and carry 10-65 lbs.; ability to move freely throughout the aquatic facility.
