Job summary

YMCA of San Diego County is seeking an Aquatics Director to lead the comprehensive aquatics program at the McGrath Family YMCA. You will oversee safety, staff, budgeting, and program development to ensure high-quality aquatics services for the community.

The role requires a Bachelor's degree (or equivalent), 3+ years of supervisory aquatics experience, and active certifications in CPR/AED, First Aid, and Lifeguarding.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree or equivalent in recreation, education, or related field with aquatics focus.
• Minimum 3 years of aquatic supervisory experience.
• CPO certification to be obtained within 60 days of hire.
• Current First Aid for Public Safety Personnel (Title 22) and CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer.
• Lifeguard certification (YMCA USA or Red Cross) and Swim Lesson Instructor or Water Safety Instructor certification.
• Proven supervisory skills in hiring, training, evaluating, and motivating staff and volunteers.

Responsibilities

• Lead all functions of the Aquatics Department including safety, pool mechanics, swim lessons, lifeguarding and related classes.
• Audit pool systems and water quality to meet state codes and ensure proper chemical balance.
• Develop and implement new aquatics programs and assess their success.
• Plan, manage and monitor the Aquatics Department budget.
• Schedule and document monthly staff meetings focused on safety and customer service.
• Serve as Manager-on-Duty and maintain a safe, clean facility.
• Demonstrate strong communication and organizational skills and ability to work with public, staff and volunteers.
• Provide fiscal management and expertise in aquatics programming.

Job description

Overview

The Aquatics Director oversees and provides leadership to the Aquatics Program. The Aquatic Director is responsible for the development, administration, implementation and ongoing evaluation of all related programs. The Director develops and implements a comprehensive Aquatics program for the YMCA of San Diego County.

Schedule

• Location: McGrath Family YMCA
• Monday - Friday with occasional Saturdays when needed

Responsibilities

• Manages all functions of the Aquatics Department including, but not limited to, aquatic safety,hazardous materials, pool mechanics, swim lessons, lifeguarding, and swim team and any additional specialty classes
• Perform audits of pool systems and equipment to include, ensuring water quality meets state codes and local regulations, managing pool maintenance by ensuring aquatic staff monitor and maintain the proper chemical balance
• Assess program success and assists in the development and implementation of new programs
• Responsible for the development, control, and monitoring of Aquatics Department budgets, and ensures all budgets meet year-end outcomes
• Plans, conducts, and documents monthly staff meetings, focusing on safety, review of established policies and procedures, and customer service
• Serves as the Manager-on-duty when necessary, and assists in the maintenance of clean, attractive, safe, and well-maintained facilities
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills
• Strong organizational abilities; self-starter with initiative to work independently and with minimum supervision
• Professional demeanor, excellent verbal and written communication skills, and the ability to work well with the public, staff, and volunteers
• Proven fiscal management skills, knowledge of and expertise in aquatics programming
• Must have the visual and auditory ability to respond to critical incidents and the physical ability to act swiftly in an emergency situation; ability to adequately observe participant activities, enforce safety regulations, and apply appropriate policies and procedures; the physical ability to lead and interact in group activities and perform related physical skills
• Other duties as assigned

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Recreation, Education, or related field, or equivalent experience in aquatics
• 3+ years' aquatic supervisory experience required
• Current CPO certification within 60 days of employment
• Must have current certifications in First Aid for Public Safety Personnel (Title 22), CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer, Oxygen Administration. Current Lifeguard Certification (YMCA of the USA or Red Cross). Current YMCA of the USA Swim Lesson Instructor Certification or Red Cross Water Safety instructor (YMCA certification within 6 months)
• Proven supervisory skills in hiring, training, evaluating, and motivating staff and volunteers, as well as developing an effective staff team
• Licensing, state law and our government funders require that staff within YMCA of San Diego County be fingerprinted, prior to reporting to work, and includesubsequentarrest notifications
• CPR/AED, and First Aid Certification, must include Adult and Child/Infant, obtained within30 daysofhireand must be from one of the following certifying organizations:
  • American Red Cross
  • American Heart Association
  • American Safety & Health Institute

Pay Range

USD $70,304.00 - USD $78,747.88 /Yr.
