Job summary

The Boys’ Club of New York Inc. in New York, NY is seeking an Aquatics Director to lead and oversee Clubhouse aquatics programs for youths aged 7–21. The role focuses on safety, development, and inter-departmental collaboration to promote healthy lifestyles.

Responsibilities include managing Learn-To-Swim, Lifeguard Training, and Swim Team activities; coordinating staff and trainings; ensuring compliance with health and safety standards; and maintaining program budgets and records.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Recreation/Physical Education or related field is desirable.
  • Excellent communication, critical thinking, and decision-making skills are required.
  • Commitment to a collaborative team-oriented management approach is expected.
  • Demonstrated leadership skills and experience with youth development are preferred.
  • Experience with activity planning and facilitating youth activities is a plus.

Responsibilities

  • Create, administer, and supervise an age-appropriate aquatics program for members including instructional swim, specialized activities, and swim team preparation.
  • Coordinate, facilitate, and teach rostered aquatics programs (Learn-To-Swim, Lifeguard Training, Swim Team Practice) and monitor attendance.
  • Establish standards of behavior to create safe, orderly learning environments.
  • Coach the swim team, schedule practices, and organize attendance at meets.
  • Facilitate CPR and First Aid Certification trainings for staff; include AED and emergency drills.
  • Evaluate members’ skills and adjust coaching techniques based on strengths and weaknesses.
  • Ensure safety and sanitary conditions of the pool per City of New York rules and record-keeping.
  • Hire, train, and manage part-time staff and volunteers; ensure adequate coverage.
  • Ensure compliance with regulations and BCNY policies.
  • Manage department expenses within budget; procure materials and equipment as needed.
  • Prepare regular activity and attendance reports.
  • Maintain certifications (CPR, AED, Lifeguard, WSI, Pool Operator) and stay updated.
  • Lead staff development, meetings, and trainings; foster teamwork and positive work culture.

Job Summary

The Aquatics Director is responsible for the overall development, initiation, management, and evaluation of Clubhouse aquatics programs for members ages 7-21. Activities should focus on the physical, social, and educational development of BCNY members with an emphasis on inter-departmental activities, community outreach and staff development. He/she will collect and analyze data to identify needs prior to planning, implementing, monitoring, and evaluating programs designed to encourage safe swimming and healthy lifestyles.

Responsibilities

Create, administer, and supervise an age-appropriate aquatics program for members including all elements of instructional swim, specialized swim activities as necessary and swim team preparation, training, and competition to ensure they meet stated objectives and member needs and interests

Coordinate, facilitate, and teach rostered aquatics programs (Learn-To-Swim, Lifeguard Training, Swim Team Practice, etc.) and monitor attendance in adherence to Clubhouse policies and other scheduled programs

Establish and maintain standards of behavior to create safe, orderly, and effective environments for learning

Coach the Clubhouse swim team, including scheduling and running practices, organizing attendance and participation at local and regional swim meets

Facilitate CPR and First Aid Certification trainings for Boys’ Club staff as needed, including AED and Emergency Drill courses

Evaluate members' skills and review performance records to determine their fitness and potential in a particular area of aquatics; adjust coaching techniques, based on the strengths and weaknesses of swimmers

Ensure the required safety and sanitary conditions of the swimming pool are met during program hours and record and maintain information as required by the City of New York’s Department of Health relative to the operation of swimming pools

Select, train, and manage all part-time staff and volunteers working with boys, including evaluating and assessing their needs for ongoing professional development; managing staff schedules and ensuring adequate coverage of the swimming pool and locker room areas

Ensure staff members and department operations remain in compliance with federal, state, and local regulations as well as BCNY policies and procedures

Manage expenses, ensuring quality program implementation within budgetary limits

Recommend, order, authorize, and assume responsibility for the purchase of materials, supplies, and equipment designed to meet member needs

Compile regular reports reflecting all activities, attendance and participation

Manage activities across the department, including parent communication, supplies procurement, student data collection, and events

Maintain all necessary certifications on an on-going basis prior to expiration (CPR, AED, Lifeguard, WSI, Pool Operator, etc.)

Keep abreast of changing rules, techniques, technologies, and philosophies relevant to aquatics

Lead professional development, staff meetings, and trainings for part-time staff as needed

Create a positive work atmosphere that fosters teamwork and a constructive exchange of ideas

Ensure that all staff members adhere to behavior, discipline, and safety policies

Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in Recreation/Physical Education or related field desirable

Minimum 3 years related work experience, preferably working with youth

Excellent communication, critical thinking, and decision-making skills

Commitment to a collaborative team-oriented management approach

Demonstrated experience with activity planning, facilitation, and working with a like population

Understanding of strengths-based approaches to youth development

Demonstrated leadership skills

First Aid and CPR certification desirable
