Job Title: Aquatics Coordinator

Location: Olive Branch, MS

Job Type: Part-time

SUMMARY OF POSITION

Responsible for the direct supervision, control, and safety of all staff members, YMCA members, guests, and program participants during all aquatic activities.

PURPOSE OF POSITION

This position supports the work of the Y, a leading nonprofit committed to strengthening community through youth development, healthy living and social responsibility. Maintains safe swimming conditions in your area of responsibility and is readily available while on shift. The Aquatics Coordinator is responsible for responding to any level of incident or emergency around the pool areas and the facility, maintaining YMCA and American Red Cross standards, and maintaining communication and relationships with other staff, members, and guests while enforcing established rules fairly and politely, and completing any other tasks assigned by the Aquatics Director.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
  • Supervises personnel including lifeguards, swim instructors, water fitness instructors, coaches and volunteers as needed.
  • Maintains active surveillance of the pool area; scan to see entire area of protection.
  • Knows/reviews all emergency procedures and responds to emergency situations immediately in accordance with YMCA policies and procedures. Observes the 10/20 rule and completes related reports as required.
  • Maintains effective, positive relationships with members, participants and other staff.
  • Knows, understands, and consistently applies safety rules, policies and guidelines for the pool and aquatic area. Maintains accurate records as required by the YMCA and/or the state Health Department code.
  • Performs equipment checks and ensures appropriate equipment is available as needed.
  • Checks the pool for hazardous conditions when arriving.
  • Performs chemical testing when not guarding, as required, and takes appropriate action.
  • Attends all staff meetings and in‑service training.
  • Participates in LRDs as directed by Aquatics Director, YMCA and ARC.
  • Assists with various camps and programs as assigned.
  • Performs various opening and closing duties as described on the daily to‑do list.
  • Performs various maintenance duties as directed to maintain a clean and safe facility.
  • Vacuum pool bottom, empty skimmer baskets, skim the surface of the pools; prepare pool surroundings for daily use including but not limited to straightening tables, chairs, pool equipment and offices and dispose of trash and debris.
  • Maintains amenities and cleanliness of the changing rooms and bathrooms. Maintains guard shack and storage areas as needed.
  • Keeps Director informed of any problems arising with patrons, other staff or the facility.
  • Arrives at least 5 minutes before shift starts and is stand‑ready at the start of your shift.
  • Does not read or use phone (including AirPods and smart watch) while on stand or other than on break.
  • While off stand but not on break is readily available and looks approachable to assist members, enforce rules and assist guard on stand.
  • Wears a proper lifeguard uniform and addresses environmental concerns. Uniform includes an outer layer that identifies you as a lifeguard, polarized sunglasses (if sunny and pool gear), a fanny pack with a properly inflated big easy rescue mask and gloves, whistle, hat or visor if desired.
  • Accurately reports work time via approved YMCA Clocking Method: Branch Kiosk, YMCA site phone, YMCA iPad or timesheet.

QUALIFICATIONS, KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES
  • Minimum age of 18.
  • Must have worked a minimum of 4 seasons.
  • Certifications: CPR for the Professional Rescuer, AED, Basic First Aid and Emergency Oxygen.
  • Current ARC certification.
  • Ability to maintain certification‑level of physical and mental readiness.
  • Must demonstrate lifeguard skills in accordance with YMCA and ARC standards.
  • Must take and complete required training courses before the first shift as determined by your supervisor and/or human resources.
WORK SCHEDULE

The work schedules may vary per the Y’s hours of operation. Most Y’s are open 7 days a week:

Mon. – Fri. 5:00 a.m. – 8:00 p.m.
Sat. 8:00 a.m. – 6:00 p.m.
Sun. 1:00 p.m. – 6:00 p.m.

WORK ENVIRONMENT AND PHYSICAL DEMANDS
  • Heard noises and distress signals in the aquatic environment, including in the water and anywhere around the zone of responsibility.
  • Must be able to remain alert and with no lapses of consciousness.
  • Must be able to sit or stand for extended periods of time.
  • Must be able to work in extreme weather temperatures/conditions (i.e. extremely hot climates with appropriate breaks).
  • Ability to perform strenuous physical tasks necessary for a water rescue.
  • Sees and observes all sections of an assigned zone or area of responsibility.
  • Ability to perceive, identify and respond to signs of distress.
SALARY

$15.00-$17.00
