Michigan State University College of Engineering is seeking an Aquatics Coordinator / Intramural Sports Coordinator to manage and oversee all aquatic programming and operations. The role involves supervising part-time staff, ensuring safety compliance, and enhancing customer experience in aquatic facilities. Collaborate with the Assistant Director of Aquatics Operations to create, implement, and update aquatic emergency action plans, employee manuals, and standard operating procedures to operate under the American Red Cross Lifeguarding program. Prioritize tasks and delegate duties to part-time employees for pre- and post-operation activities for all events. Coordinate programming and scheduling of daily offerings, Spartan Swim School, Aquatic Sport Clubs, Kinesiology classes, SCUBA, group fitness offerings, lifeguard certification courses, and other aquatic events through daily communication.
Assist the Aquatics program to ensure compliance with all state and national codes/standards, including Ingham County Health Department, National Pool and Spa Association, and ADA guidelines regarding accessibility of recreation and pool facilities. Oversee all aquatics programming to ensure excellent customer service and guest experience.
Recruit, hire, train, supervise, approve payroll, and evaluate all part-time aquatics employees (70+), including student coordinators, head lifeguards, swim instructors, and lifeguards. Determine staffing needs and hire qualified candidates based on certifications, experience, and skills. Assist in organizing staff training, oversee operations and scheduling, and evaluate personnel regularly to ensure standards are met.
Promote staff development, teamwork, morale, and mentorship. Collaborate with campus units to support a diverse, equitable, and inclusive environment. Assist with budgeting, resource allocation, and promotion of programs. Collect data on pool usage, attendance, risk assessments, maintenance, surveys, and training evaluations to inform decisions and prepare reports. Enforce RSFS policies regarding facility usage and create collaborative programming as needed. Serve on departmental and university committees as assigned.
All positions are critical. In case of university closure or emergency, you are expected to report to work as scheduled. Remote work may be permitted for some hours, but on-site presence is required unless otherwise approved. Contact RCPD for accommodations if needed.
Knowledge equivalent to a four-year college degree (e.g., in Business Administration, Parks & Recreation, Sports Management, Kinesiology, Exercise Science, Health & Physical Education). One to three years’ experience in aquatics operations and programming, supervision, and relevant certifications (Lifeguard Instructor, CPR/AED, First Aid/CPR Instructor, Water Safety Instructor) or equivalent experience.
Experience in aquatics safety, emergency management, and event management.
