Job description

POSITION SUMMARY:

Under the supervision of the Aquatics Director, the Aquatics Coordinator is responsible for indoor aquatic programs and activities within the YMCA and provides leadership to staff responsible for designing and delivering those activities. They will work to strengthen relationships with members and build communities around common goals while maintaining safety in the pool, on the deck and surrounding areas.

They will be responsible for managing those functions in accordance with the stated mission and policies established by the YMCA of the Triangle Area.

Job Schedule: Saturdays 8:00am - 12:00pm. Some weekday days and evenings required.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Oversees and manages swim lesson instructors, lifeguards and head lifeguards. Maintains an open line of communication with direct supervisor, guards and other support staff.
  • Ensures delivery of high quality aquatic programs that support member health and wellness goals plus a positive member experience.
  • Leads effort for the aquatics team to effectively engage with members.
  • Maintain the health, sanitation and clarity of pool. Performs chemical testing/equipment checks when not guarding, as required, and takes appropriate action. Check the pool for hazardous conditions when arriving and prior to shift ending. Maintains accurate records as required by the YMCA and/or the state Health Department code.
  • Serves as principal ‘connector’ of Aquatic Programs and other aspects of the branch ensuring a positive and safe environment. Oversees swim lessons to ensure safety, on-time scheduling and accurate reporting of children’s progress.
  • Leads and attends all staff meetings and in-service trainings. Knows/reviews all emergency procedures and responds to emergency situations immediately in accordance with YMCA policies and procedures. Completes related reports as required.
  • Ensures accurate communication of pool scheduling to members, ensuring all communication avenues are up to date.
  • Ensures departmental compliance with all branch and association standards in programs, administration, business and operations.
  • Models relationship-building skills in all interactions. Develops and maintains collaborative relationships with community organizations. Maintains regular, clear, and concise communication within area of responsibility.
  • Other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Must be at least 16 years of age.
  • High School Diploma/GED and 2-3 years of related experience.
  • Experience in leading others, pool programming, pool maintenance, volunteer cultivation, staff development and supervision.
  • Must be professional, courteous and friendly, have a high level of initiative and be a self-starter.
  • Must have excellent communication skills, be well organized, and be able to respond appropriately in a dynamic, fluid environment.
  • Able to determine and set priorities, as well as the capacity to respond and handle multiple tasks appropriately in a dynamic and fast-paced work environment is critical.
  • Must meet all requirements to physically perform all necessary rescue and survival skills.
  • Lifeguard, Basic Life Support, Basic First Aid, and Emergency Oxygen certifications must be obtained prior to start date.
  • Ability and desire to plan and teach swim lessons to children and adults of all ages.
  • Ability to relate effectively to diverse groups of people from all social and economic segments of the community.
  • Multi-lingual desired but not required.

  • Compliance with all COVID related PPE, cleaning, reporting and prevention expectations efforts. Further training and detail will be provided upon question and/or hire.
