Job description

GENERAL FUNCTION: Under the direction of the appropriate Director, the Aquatic Coordinator will assist with the leadership, management, and supervision of the Aquatics Department and staff to provide the highest quality programming within a safe environment. A 40-hour work week will be necessary to accomplish the assigned responsibilities.

MINIMUM ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

Education/Experience Requirements:

  • Minimum age of 21
  • Must have 1 year of experience supervising staff
  • Relevant experience in aquatics and college degree preferred

Physical/Mental Requirements:

  • Must be able to frequently perform the following physical activities: swim, bend, stoop, kneel, twist, reach with hands, sit, stand for extended periods, walk, lift and carry up to 50 pounds, and communicate verbally
  • Must be able to work both indoors and outdoors and be exposed to prevalent weather conditions
  • Must maintain lifeguard certification level of physical and mental readiness
  • Must be able to visually see all sections of an assigned zone or area of responsibility
  • Must be able to adequately hear noises and distinguish distress signals
  • Must possess the ability to remain alert and maintain concentration for long periods to ensure safety of participants
  • Must possess the ability to make independent and sound decisions in a rapidly changing environment
  • Must be able to show initiative in the absence of supervision
  • Must be able to relate to and work with diverse groups of people in a friendly and consistent manner
  • Must be able to handle questions/concerns and resolve conflicts courteously and professionally
  • Must maintain a neat and professional appearance

Job Requirements:

  • Commitment to the YMCA mission, vision, and values
  • Must attend New Employee Orientation within 30 days of hire
  • Complete BLS/AED, First Aid, O2, Lifeguard Certification in accordance with Conditions of Employment
  • Understand and abide by all policies and procedures as set forth by the association
  • Work a schedule that reflects the needs of the branch

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES

  1. Responsible for maintaining all lifeguard skills as required in lifeguard certification.
  2. Provide excellent customer service to staff, participants, members, volunteers, and the general public.
  3. Assist in training, scheduling, supervising, and evaluating all staff and volunteers.
  4. Assist in development and enforcement of departmental policies.
  5. Keep accurate records of aquatic participation numbers.
  6. Evaluate service regularly to improve quality through written and oral feedback.
  7. Maintain familiarity with all risk management procedures and policies.
  8. Assist in developing and enforcing departmental policies.
  9. Be visible to staff and members at all times while on duty.
  10. Support membership and program operations by training and communicating information promptly.
  11. Maintain an up-to-date inventory of all equipment, materials, and supplies; regularly check pool equipment and report irregularities for repair.
  12. Maintain the aquatic area in an orderly, clean, and safe condition.
  13. Follow all risk management guidelines and be prepared to implement emergency procedures.
  14. Notify supervisor of any concerns with the facility or equipment to ensure safety.
  15. Enforce all program rules and policies.
  16. Attend all required training sessions and scheduled meetings.
  17. Manage scheduled hours responsibly; secure substitutes when necessary; notify supervisor in advance and in writing.
  18. Maintain positive relationships with members, participants, and staff.
  19. Support fundraising efforts such as the Strong Community Campaign.
  20. Perform other duties as assigned.
