Qualifications

  • Knowledge of American Red Cross policies and lifeguarding methods and techniques is preferred.
  • Experience with recreation software is preferred.

Department: Recreation Department

Summary

The Aquatics Coordinator is an essential part of Recreation with the Town of Berthoud. This position reports directly to the Aquatics Supervisor. This position is responsible for supervising the Berthoud Recreation Center's aquatic facility, Splash Pad and staff. This person will oversee 40-50 part-time employees, trainings, maintenance, programs, and the general operations of the swimming pools to ensure all patrons of the facility receive the highest level of safety and service. The schedule for this position is full-time, with four ten-hour days, Sunday through Wednesday, or as required by programs and staffing.

Essential Duties And Responsibilities
  • Supervision of 40-50 part-time aquatic staff, including but not limited to lifeguards, swim instructors, swim coaches, and slide attendants.
  • Assists in the scheduling of aquatic staff and maintaining proper coverage at all times.
  • Monitors safe and efficient staffing levels during working hours.
  • Ability to use effective means of communication and coach temporary staff to enhance job performance, safety standards, and customer service.
  • Oversee hiring, training, and onboarding of aquatic staff members.
    • Conducts direct oversight of all swim programs and teaches swim lessons, lifeguards, and works closely with the operations team to ensure the success of the aquatic area.
  • Promote and participate in a safety-conscious environment.
  • Monitor employees' report to work on time and are placed in their proper assignments, contact replacements, and complete employee counseling forms as needed.
  • Supervise the aquatic facility and programs.
  • Handles and/or reports any problems in staff relationships to the Aquatic Supervisor.
  • Assist in monitoring, maintaining, and adjusting pool filtration, mechanical, and chemical feed systems with proper training and guidance of the Aquatic Supervisor. Perform various pool maintenance functions, including backwashing, cleaning lint baskets, and filters.
  • Assist and monitor chemical readings. Make accurate, safe, and necessary adjustments while communicating with the Aquatics Supervisor.
  • Keep chemical and filter room logs current and accurate, communicating with supervisors when appropriate.
  • Enforce policies, rules, and regulations governing the conduct of staff and patrons using the pool and maintain proper records and reports for adherence to all applicable Health Codes.
  • Assist visitors or staff in non-emergency and emergency situations.
  • Complete, submit, review, and maintain a variety of forms and files: incident, accident, and facility safety checks.
  • Defuse conflict situations professionally, resulting in a positive resolution with staff, supervisors, and patrons.
  • Make and/or maintain cordial and professional public relations with patrons.
  • Conduct consistent walk-throughs of the pool facility.
  • Assist in custodial maintenance of the aquatic facility, including trash removal, snow removal, and the cleaning of pool areas, restrooms, and locker rooms.
  • Coordinate, attend, and participate in staff training and Head Guard trainings.
  • Adhere to and perform open and closing procedures for the Berthoud Recreation Center and Pool when needed.
  • Perform administrative tasks including program enrolment, brochure input, and other duties assigned.
  • Manage inventory of lifeguard equipment, fitness and safety supplies, pool chemicals, etc.
  • Promote programs within the organization.
  • Plan and oversee the swim lesson aide program.
  • Plan and oversee the Lifeguard bootcamp program.
  • Perform other duties as assigned and required.
Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities
  • Bachelor’s degree in recreation or related field, or equivalent years of experience.
  • 2-4 years of experience as a lifeguard is required.
  • 2-4 years of supervisory experience required.
  • Experience in pool chemistry and pool maintenance is required.
  • Pool chemistry testing and adjustment procedures is required.
  • Experience with recreation software is preferred.
  • Knowledge of American Red Cross policies and procedures, philosophies, lifeguarding methods and techniques and organizational procedures
  • Considerable knowledge of developing and administering recreation aquatics and youth programs.
  • A strong passion for swimming lessons and developing young swimmers and instructors.
  • Ability to work in stressful situations; ability to stay calm; have excellent problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to work evenings, night shifts, split shifts and weekends. This position will work four (4) ten-hour shifts, though the schedule varies based on program needs.
  • Ability to participate and direct aquatic programs and activities.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers, public, news media and other departments and agencies; ability to follow written and oral instructions; ability to communicate effectively, verbally and in writing; ability to direct the work of others.
  • Cultivate and maintain positive relationships with participants and create a welcoming and inclusive environment.

Certificates And Licenses
  • A valid Colorado Driver’s License is required.
  • Current lifeguard certification required with waterpark preferred.
  • CPO certification preferred or ability to obtain.
  • Lifeguard instructor certification preferred or ability to obtain within 3 months of hire.
Computer Skills
  • To perform this job successfully, an individual should understand general office software, including word processing and spreadsheets. Also, a basic understanding of internet research tools is required.
Work Environment

Work is performed in an indoor and outdoor environment. While performing the duties of this job, the employee will work with moving mechanical parts, fumes or airborne particles and chemicals such as cleaning chemicals, paints, pool chemicals, and /or similar solutions. The employee may be exposed to outdoor weather conditions. The employee may regularly travel to and from buildings to complete job responsibilities and tasks assigned. The noise level in the work environment may be loud at times with frequent interruptions and frequent contact with members of the public.

  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to sit; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; and talk or hear.
  • The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.
  • Physical effort may require, but not limited to, lifting weights, squatting, bending, reaching, spotting, and prolonged standing and walking.
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.
  • Manual dexterity enough to complete daily work such as room setups/breakdowns, cleaning, drive and operate motor vehicles and lifts, and operate other office equipment and complete paperwork.
