Job summary

Boys & Girls Clubs of Delaware is seeking an Aquatic Specialist - Lifeguard to ensure the safety of patrons and members at the club's aquatics facility. The role requires monitoring activities, maintaining pool chemical levels, and responding to emergencies under the supervision of the Aquatics Director.

Candidates should have First Aid/CPR/AED knowledge, lifeguard certification (Ellis & Associates) or willingness to obtain, and at least one year of lifeguard experience or pool operations

Qualifications

• Demonstrated ability to handle emergency situations and basic lifesaving skills.
• Must be CPR, First Aid Rescue Breathing and spinal injury handling certified or willing to become certified.
• Minimum one year lifeguard experience or pool operations preferred.

Responsibilities

• Cooperate with staff to implement aquatics programs and meet club objectives.
• Maintain proper chemical balance in pool water.
• Monitor pool activities and identify safety issues.
• Direct swimmers to exit pool during hazards and report unsafe conditions.
• Keep pool area clean and safe; support youth programs.
• Assist in crisis or emergency situations per policy.

For over 90 years, Boys & Girls Clubs of Delaware has impacted thousands of lives across Delaware. We are the largest licensed provider of childcare in Delaware and the only statewide Boys & Girls Club in the nation.

Each and everyday girls and boys are left to find their own recreation and companionship. An increasing number of kids are at home with no adult care or supervision. Young people need to know they have a place in their community where they can go. Clubs provide a safe haven for youth, allow them to meet with friends and be a part of positive peer groups. Club programs teach life skills, conflict resolution and focus on the development of character. Clubs also provide members with positive role models and a nurturing environment that help improve decision-making skills.

Position Summary

Under the supervision of the Aquatics Director, lifeguards are responsible for ensuring the safety of the
patrons and members at their assigned club/aquatics facility by preventing and responding to emergencies.

Essential Functions:

• Cooperate with other staff in implementing aquatics programs and activities with other Club programs and activities, as well as in meeting programmatic objectives and outcomes established for the Club.
• Treat pool with the appropriate concentration of chemicals on a regular basis
• Monitor pool-related activities closely throughout shift and identify safety issues
• Direct all swimmers out of the pool in hazardous conditions and report any unsafe conditions to your manager
• Maintain a clean and safe environment in and around pool area
• Consistently incorporate “high yield learning activities” in all aquatics youth programs.
• Assist or take charge in crisis or emergency situations per established BGCDE and Ellis & Associates’ policies and guidelines.
• Directly supervise children and youth within guidelines established by Boys & Girls Clubs of Delaware and the Aquatics Director.
• Assist in the guidance and discipline of Club members and other patrons in your area of responsibility.
• Complete and submit reports, and perform other administrative tasks as needed or directed.
• Contribute toward development of a positive identity and strong presence for the Boys & Girls Clubs in the community.
• Must complete the required in-service trainings and pass regular VAT (Visual Awareness Training) drills.

ENVIRONMENTAL AND WORKING CONDITIONS:

• For the most part, environmental and working conditions are indoors; various meeting locations in and out of the Club; local and occasional statewide travel required; occasional outdoor events and other activities.
• This position does require you to work in an area where chemicals are present.
• The indoor conditions that you will be working in will contain chlorine vapors and some areas contain high pressure CO2 storage. The average air temperature is 86 degrees and the water temperature is on average 84 degrees
• Employees are subject to transfer from one department to another and from one club/school site to another as the needs of the organization change.

Minimum Qualifications:

• Demonstrated ability to handle emergency situations, general knowledge of First Aid/CPR/AED, First Aid Rescue Breathing and handling of a spinal injury. If not certified must be willing to become certified before the start date, and must have general knowledge of pools and lifeguarding.
• Must be a certified Ellis and Associates Lifeguard and Basic Leadership certified, or willing and able to become certified in these areas.
• A minimum of one year lifeguard experience or pool operations is preferred.
• Must be certified in CPR, First Aid Rescue Breathing and the handling of a spinal injury or willing and able to become certified in these areas.

Physical Requirements:

• Maintain a high energy level.
• Ability to provide rescue assistance to any patron in distress
• Must be able to swim 100 yards without stopping
• Must be able to tread water without using hands for 1 minute
• Must be able to retrieve a ten pound brick from the deep end of the pool
• Must be able to operate all emergency medical and lifesaving equipment
• Regularly speak clearly and hear spoken word

Work Hours

Multiple shifts are available Monday- Friday between 6:15 a.m. and 8:15 p.m. , and Saturdays between 7:45 a.m. and 2:15 p.m.
