Position Summary
This position supports the work of the Y, a leading nonprofit, charitable organization committed to strengthening community through youth development, healthy living, and social responsibility. The Lifeguard creates a safe and positive atmosphere that welcomes and respects all individuals while promoting and maintaining a safe swimming environment in the pool, deck, and surrounding areas in accordance with YMCA policies and procedures.

Essential Functions

  1. Actively maintain current CPR, First Aid, and other required YMCA certifications (Red Cross, ASHI, Y of the USA, etc.).
  2. Report to work on time with appropriate safety equipment (fanny pack) and clothing.
  3. Ensure safety of all participants in the aquatics area at all times.
  4. Adhere to Blood Borne Pathogen standards and complete annual training.
  5. Notify supervisor of any faulty equipment or unsafe conditions promptly.
  6. Document incidents during shifts and notify supervisor.
  7. Be visibly involved with members, volunteers, and staff positively and friendly, maintaining safety.
  8. Test and document water quality as required by health authorities.
  9. Keep the pool area free of clutter and accessible for emergency response.
  10. Follow all safety and personnel policies.
  11. Participate in and support events and fundraisers.
  12. Secure necessary trainings and certifications.
  13. Perform other duties as assigned.
  14. Attend monthly in-service training and communicate work availability timely.
  15. Monitor chlorine, pH levels, and water temperature hourly.
  16. Sanitize all equipment and areas regularly.
  17. Report to work on time, with supplies and in uniform.
  18. Follow child abuse and neglect reporting procedures, including completing reports, calling CPS, and notifying supervisors and HR.

Qualifications

Experience: Prior experience helpful but not required.

Certifications and Requirements:

  • CPR and First Aid certifications and safety training required within 30 days of hire.
  • Current YMCA Lifeguard certification or valid Red Cross Lifeguard certification with YMCA crossover within 90 days.
  • WSI certification is a plus.
  • Must be at least 16 years old.

Technical Skills and Knowledge

  • Ability to read, write, and understand directions.
  • Commitment to YMCA’s mission and values.
  • Ability to work effectively with diverse groups.
  • Willingness to be a mandated reporter for child abuse and neglect.

Physical Demands

  • Frequent sitting, standing, swimming, walking, reaching, stooping, kneeling, and instructing.
  • Occasionally lift/move up to 100 pounds.
  • Specific vision abilities required include close and distance vision.
  • Physical ability to perform water rescues.

Work Environment

  • Maintain a clean and orderly work environment.
  • Work may be noisy, slippery, wet, and outdoors with possible inclement weather.
