Job summary

The Commonwealth of Pennsylvania is seeking an Aquatic Biologist 1 with the Department of Environmental Protection to collect samples, study aquatic life, and support black fly control operations. This role focuses on fieldwork, data evaluation, and coordinating suppression operations to protect public health and recreation.

Starting salary is $53,008 per year for new hires; telework may be available. The position requires a biology-related degree with relevant coursework and PA residency.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in biological science, natural science, environmental science, or natural resource management; six college credits in freshwater aquatic biology, aquatic ecology, aquatic botany, water pollution biology, entomology, limnology, or related aquatic science coursework; or equivalent combination including six credits
  • Applicants may meet educational requirements within three months of graduation

Responsibilities

  • Field sampling of black fly larvae, adults, fish, macroinvertebrates, aquatic plants, plankton, and water chemistry data
  • Review species information, abundance counts, life stages, and treatment effectiveness records
  • Maintain records of sampling activities, spray operations, and related program data
  • Respond to public complaints and inquiries in a timely manner
  • Coordinate staff during sampling activities and contribute to program reports and GIS mapping
