Job summary

The North Carolina Department of Natural and Cultural Resources’ Aquariums division seeks a Communications Manager for the Fort Fisher site. You will oversee public relations, marketing campaigns, and media engagement to promote programs and events.

You will edit materials, coordinate with local tourism partners, and supervise a communications assistant. The role requires strong writing, media relations, and leadership skills, with weekend/holiday coverage as needed.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in communications, public relations, public affairs, media journalism, English, or a related field.
• Two years of experience in communications, public relations, or publicity work; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
• Demonstrated experience in public speaking and media communications.
• Demonstrated experience using Internet and social media sites for promotion and marketing.
• Demonstrated experience using Microsoft Office Suite and assorted graphics/presentation/editing software.
• Demonstrated experience with professional writing and editing information for press releases.
• Supervisory experience is preferred.

Responsibilities

• Directs communication, promotion, marketing, publicity, and public engagement campaigns across programs and the Aquarium.
• Edits exhibit text, signage, educational and promotional materials.
• Develops campaigns using creative public relations and marketing strategies to raise awareness of the Aquarium’s programs and mission.
• Collaborates with NC Aquariums, DNCR, and partner organizations to align messaging and public relations.
• Represents the Aquarium with media, tourism officials, and community partners.
• Supervises a communications assistant and coordinates cross-facility promotions.
