Summary / Objective

The Aquaculture Technician in Training will demonstrate a passion for fish husbandry, a strong work ethic, attention to detail and perform a variety of aquaculture husbandry duties.

• Daily farm chores including feeding, mortality removal, and screen scrubbing.

Essential Functions

• Knowledge of the facility including sections, pond numbers, and rearing areas.
• Knowledge of the Emergency Action Plan.
• Dependable, trustworthy and consistent in role on the farm.
• General understanding of the feed schedule.
• Understanding of the farm workflow.
• Knowing locations of offline settling ponds and sumps.
• Knowing locations of influent valves and head ditches.
• Knowledge of fish barriers and their uses including tail screens, jump boards, graders and other screens.
• Knowledge of facility equipment.
• Aware of potential farm hazards.
• Aware of significant manure build‑up, wasted feed and broken tail screens.
• Aware of technician’s activities and meaning of withdrawal tags on the ponds.
• Knowledge of SDS locations and usage.
• Biosecurity awareness.
• Knowledge of hatch‑house, outdoor and disinfection procedures.
• Counting and picking mortality.
• Ability to handle and select proper grading techniques.
• Truck maintenance and cleanliness.
• Cleaning screens.
• Care of vehicles, equipment, and farm safety.
• Basic pond hygiene.
• Cleaning of debris on head ditch grates and first‑use pond entry points.
• Vacuum or pumping operation and maintenance.
• Removing and recording mortalities.
• Monitoring fish behaviour and reporting abnormalities.
• Assisting with fish transfers.
• Routine maintenance on equipment and systems, sweeping raceways, cleaning and repairing graders.
• Completing all tasks based on required safety guidelines.
• Participating in all safety training.
• Willingness to perform any farm task regardless of skill or seniority.
• Practising bio‑security procedures around the farm.
• Maintaining appropriate housekeeping and sanitation procedures and required biosecurity measures.
• Providing prompt, friendly and courteous service to internal and external customers.
• Helping out with other areas on the farm when needed.
• Other duties as required.

Work Environment

The job is performed outdoors and routinely exposes the employee to inclement weather conditions.

Physical Demands

• Heavy work, frequent and constant exertion to move objects; lifting up to 50 lbs occasionally.
• Use of waders, climbing in and out of raceways and on/off trucks.
• Walking or moving to accomplish tasks frequently.

Position Type / Expected Hours of Work

Full‑time position, 5 days a week with potential weekend work. Part‑time work may occur weekly with variable hours based on location needs. Typical schedule starts early morning and ends mid‑afternoon.
