Job description

Apprentice Technician / Wake Tech (Finance)

PRIMARY FUNCTION:

The primary function of the apprentice technician is to learn through classes and hands-on training how to perform routine mechanical repairs on construction equipment. This is a PART-TIME position involving 2 days per week in class at Wake Technical Community College and 3 days per week as a paid intern at the Gregory Poole Shop.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES:
  1. Learn and utilize safety practices associated with shop operations, including the use of various shop equipment and tooling, and required PPE.
  2. Understand basic business concepts related to the service department, complete proper service documentation such as time entries, service reports, part order forms, and warranty tags.
  3. Utilize Caterpillar information systems for diagnostics, troubleshooting, ordering parts, and assembly/disassembly processes.
  4. Apply logical troubleshooting procedures using information from the Cat network, diagnostics, wiring schematics, and disassembly/assembly guidelines.
  5. Use hand and power tools to remove, install, replace, rebuild, repair, and test equipment and parts.
  6. Perform routine repairs on construction equipment.
  7. Disassemble and reassemble equipment, drain fluids, clean parts, and perform related tasks.
  8. Work safely by climbing onto, under, and into equipment to perform repairs.
  9. Assist other technicians with larger equipment repairs.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
Education:

High school diploma or GED required.

Work Experience:

Mechanical inclination and basic knowledge gained through schooling or work experience.

Physical Requirements:

Ability to stoop, kneel, bend, climb, and lift parts up to 112 pounds; capable of using mechanical hoists for heavier parts; able to see clearly for repairs and research; physically capable of handling parts and tools.

Other Skills:

Effective written communication for repair reports; problem-solving skills; exposure to PC-based equipment and parts information; ability to learn and understand technical manuals and reports.
