PRIMARY FUNCTION:

The primary function of the apprentice technician is to learn through classes and hands-on training how to perform routine mechanical repairs on equipment. This is a PART-TIME position that involves 2 days per week in class at Wake Technical Community College and 3 days per week as a paid intern at the Gregory Poole Shop.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES:

  1. Learn and utilize safety practices associated with shop operations and the use of various shop equipment and tooling. Understand the required PPE for different shop situations.
  2. Learn basic business concepts related to the service department, including proper service documentation such as time entry, service reports, part order forms, returns, core tags, and warranty tags.
  3. Gain exposure to and utilize Caterpillar information systems for diagnostics, troubleshooting, assembly/disassembly, and parts ordering.
  4. Learn and apply logical troubleshooting procedures using information from the Cat network or external sources, including diagnostics, wiring schematics, and disassembly/assembly guidelines.
  5. Use hand and power tools to remove, install, replace, rebuild, repair, and test equipment.
  6. Perform routine repairs on construction equipment.
  7. Disassemble and reassemble parts or equipment, drain fluids, clean parts, and use power washers.
  8. Climb onto, into, and under equipment to facilitate repairs, using hand and power tools.
  9. Assist other GPEC technicians with larger equipment repairs.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

Education: High school diploma or GED.

Work Experience: Mechanical inclination and basic knowledge through schooling or work experience.

Physical Requirements: Ability to stoop, kneel, bend, and climb regularly to diagnose and repair equipment; effective vision for manual work and reading manuals; ability to lift and handle parts up to 112 pounds, and use mechanical hoists for heavier parts.

Other Skills: Ability to document repair activities clearly, apply reasoning and problem-solving skills, and understand technical manuals and service reports. Exposure to PC-based equipment and parts information is preferred.
