Job summary

GATX Corporation is seeking an Apprentice Railcar Mechanic to assist Railcar Mechanics in repairing GATX-owned railcars and to learn advanced skills. Knowledge of reading blueprints and repair manuals is essential.

The role includes documenting repairs, working with hand tools, and performing tasks in various environments. The position offers competitive pay, shift options, and benefits; third shift hours are Sunday-Thursday 10pm-6:30am, with overtime eligibility.

Qualifications

• Must have basic ability to read and interpret repair manuals and work orders.
• Strong communication skills, both written and oral.
• Ability to work well independently and in a group.
• Demonstrated reliability and attendance to complete shifts.

Responsibilities

• Dismantle, repair, install parts on railway cars following GATX procedures.
• Perform minor welding; welding training provided as needed.
• Operate equipment (slings, hoisting chains, forklifts) to complete tasks.
• Maintain a clean, safe work environment at all times.
• Work in confined spaces and at heights, outdoors as required.
• Perform other tasks as assigned by supervisor.
