Job description

Company Overview

All tasks as an Apprentice Optical Network Installation Technician are performed under direct supervision from other, more experienced technicians and supervisors. Must have a strong desire to learn optical networking, take direction willingly, execute tasks as required at a high standard and show a willingness to increase their level of knowledge and competency.

Responsibilities

Apprentice Optical Network Installation Technicians, Level 1 can expect to be placed on project assignments where any combination of the following tasking could be expected:

Infrastructure installation and de-installation

  • Racks
  • Ironwork (ladder rack, subfloor infrastructure)

Cable management

  • Fiber & copper management systems (i.e. Panduit raceway, Fiber Management Systems (FMS))
  • DC Power cable (determining path, wax cord lacing)

Cable Terminations, cleaning and testing

  • RJ45
  • Coaxial/BNC
  • Wire wrap
  • Fiber Optic Cable (light levels, scoping)

Grounding

  • HTAP
  • Equipment

Documentation Responsibilities

Use of Microsoft Office suite of products for:

  • Requirements review and comprehension
  • Redlining
  • Reporting
  • Daily Status Report (DSR) submission

  • Site Completion Report (SCR) submission

  • Survey Reports

Required Experience/Qualifications
  • One year or less experience involving the construction, maintenance, or repair of various types of telecommunications or electronics equipment or an equivalent combination of education and experience, substituting completion of an accredited vocational or technical curriculum in telecommunications or a related discipline for the required experience.
  • Knowledge, Skills and Abilities at this level might include some knowledge of several types of common communications installations.
  • Could possess some hands-on knowledge of and, experience with various network devices (i.e. routers, switches, etc.) from multiple manufacturers.
  • The main qualification for an Apprentice Optical Network Technician, Level 1 is a strong willingness to learn the profession. Must be willing to take direction and apply what is being taught.
  • Business communications skills including verbal, written, and graphic should be present, as should exposure to a customer service environment where discretion and professional demeanor are commonplace.
Preferred Experience/Qualifications
  • Government network systems experience
  • Cable running, splicing, and connector exposure
  • Possession of a basic telecommunications installation tool kit
Special Requirements/Security Clearance
  • Ability to obtain a Secret security clearance
  • Willingness to travel 70% - 80% of the time with other team members to meet installation assignment requirements.
Physical Demands
  • Ability to set up and ascend/descend ladders as necessary to reach overhead cabling and components undergoing installation or deinstallation
  • Ability to get down under sub-flooring as required to reach components and cabling
  • Ability to lift at least 50 lbs
