Job summary

Safe Harbor Marinas is seeking an Apprentice Technician to join our team in Hampton, VA. You will learn to inspect, maintain, and repair boats, using diagnostic equipment to service engines, hulls, rigging, and sails, while supporting sanitation and electrical systems.

You’ll rotate through specialties, assist with parts, and gain hands-on experience under SHM supervision. The program emphasizes safety, accuracy, and ongoing skills development with opportunities for ABYC training.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent preferred
  • Technical school training preferred
  • ABYC and/or manufacturer certifications preferred
  • Ability to ascend and descend a ladder
  • Ability to work in confined spaces
  • Ability to lift 50 pounds
  • Knowledge of both gas and diesel engines preferred

Responsibilities

  • Apprentices will rotate through various specialty services and can expect to learn and assist in performing skills specific to moving equipment
  • Assist with inspecting, maintaining, and repairing boats of all kinds
  • Learn how to utilize diagnostic equipment to test and repair boat engines, hulls, propellers, rigging, masts, sails, and navigational equipment
  • Assist installing and testing sanitation and refrigeration systems, electrical systems, steering gear, and accessories
  • Learn how to troubleshoot, test, repair, replace, remove and install vessel systems and components
  • Conduct thorough assessment prior to starting a job including; acknowledging the budgeted time and time frame for completion, proving the system and the element requiring service, sourcing parts if required
  • Willingness to learn knowledge of marine systems including electrical, plumbing & water systems
  • Troubleshoot, repair, and install vessel systems and components including but not limited to: electrical, electronics, HVAC, plumbing & water systems (fresh, salt, and waste), gas and diesel engines
  • Assign parts and purchases to the appropriate vessels/tickets
  • Availability to work overtime in order to meet deadlines

Technician a pprentices are committed to working under the observation of a SHM Teammate building basic skills and taking on additional tasks and responsibilities as their skills advance. The Apprentice will learn how to inspect, maintain, and repair boats of all kinds. Using diagnostic equipment, test and repair boat engines, hulls, propellers, rigging, masts, sails, and navigational equipment. They also install and test sanitation and refrigeration systems, electrical systems, steering gear, and accessories.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Safety and Environmental Responsibilities
  • Follow SHM Safety and Environmental rules and complete required related training.
  • Wear proper personal protective equipment (may include safety glasses, gloves, life jackets and/or hard hats) as required for the task or work area.
  • Report all accidents, injuries, spills and near misses immediately.
Technical and Physical Requirements
  • High school diploma or equivalent preferred
  • Technical school training preferred
  • ABYC and/or manufacturer certifications preferred
  • Ability to ascend and descend a ladder
  • Ability to work in confined spaces
  • Ability to lift 50 pounds
  • Knowledge of both gas and diesel engines preferred
  • Any skills considered standard that a Apprentice Technician should possess
