Job description

JOB SUMMARY

Under supervision this position performs entry level skilled work in construction, operation, and maintenance of the City's Electric Utility distribution system.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
  • Assists in pole handling, setting and framing in a safe and timely fashion.
  • Operates line truck and pole trailer in safely delivering poles to the job site.
  • Stocks line truck and keeps supply of tools and materials.
  • Operates all line, digger, and bucket trucks.
  • Engages in the installation and connections of underground pad mounted transformers.
  • Engages in the installation of overhead transformers and connections.
  • Works on cold and hot secondary voltages under direct supervision of Lineman, Line Crew Leader, or Superintendent.
  • Works on cold and hot primary voltages under direct supervision of Lineman, Line Crew Leader, or Superintendent.
  • Reads electric meters.
  • Runs new service lines from transformer to point of attachment for customer.
  • Trims trees to maintain clearance from energized lines.
  • Responds to service calls during off-duty hours.
  • Cleans, washes, and stocks electric department trucks and vehicles.
  • Obtains material and equipment from trucks and hoists.
  • Assembles crossarms and prepares arrestors, transformers, and fuses for installation.
  • Drives and sets up Bucket and Derrick Trucks.
  • Loads and unloads materials, parts, and equipment.
  • Cleans and maintains department facilities and grounds.
  • Attends and participates in scheduled training and safety meetings and becomes familiar with safety rules and electrical system maintenance, construction and repairs.
  • Performs installation, repair and maintenance of overhead and underground streetlighting.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education and Experience: High school diploma or equivalent is required.

Licenses or Certifications:

  • Possession of a valid Class \"A\" Florida Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with air brake endorsement is required to operate the vehicle fleet and compliance with vehicle use policy requirements, Section 8.15(c) in the City's Personnel Manual is preferred. If you do not possess one, you must obtain it within 6 months of employment.

Special Requirements:

  • This position is designated as a safety sensitive position.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of tools, equipment, and parts used in the construction, repairing, and maintaining an electrical distribution system.
  • Knowledge of electrical system repair and replacement procedures and safe working methods.
  • Knowledge of light construction and maintenance equipment.
  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to perform strenuous physical labor, sometimes under adverse weather conditions.
  • Ability to establish effective working relationships with employees, officials, and the general public.
  • Ability to be on-call to ensure continuity of operations after hours or during emergencies, including nights, weekends, and holidays. This INCLUDES serving in standby rotation upon achieving sufficient experience and ability to serve in this capacity.
  • Ability to respond to Electric Department base from time of contact within time limits specified in the Personnel Policies and Procedures Manual residency requirement for standby personnel. Current contact information must be provided at all times, including cell phone and home phone numbers, so that Police Dispatch or other Line Department personnel may make contact as necessary.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS

The work is heavy and requires exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 50 pounds of force to move objects. Also requires the following physical abilities: balancing, climbing, crawling, crouching, feeling, manual dexterity, grasping, handling, hearing, kneeling, lifting, mental acuity, pulling, pushing, reaching, repetitive motion, speaking, standing, stooping, talking, visual acuity, and walking.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

Work is performed outside in varying weather conditions, with heights, and close to high voltage electric lines.
