SUMMARY OF JOB RESPONSIBILITIES AND REQUIREMENTS

JOB TITLE: Apprentice II, III, Intermediate RP (Radiation Protection) Technician

REQUISITION: NUC00C8

DEPARTMENT: Radiation Protection

LOCATION: Burlington, KS - Wolf Creek - Olive Ann Beech

PAY RANGE:

  • Apprentice II - $37.53
  • Apprentice III - $39.93
  • Intermediate - $47.91
POSITION OVERVIEW

The primary purpose of the Apprentice II, III positions is to provide a progression path for personnel to obtain the ANSI qualifications required for ANSI qualified Senior technicians. These positions will enable WCNOC to train personnel with little or no experience to become a Journeyman RP Technician.

RESPONSIBILITIES
  1. Complete all Radiation Protections initial, continuing, and fundamental technician training requirements or waivers, and maintain OJT qualifications.
  2. Provide radiological controls during plant operations, maintenance, refueling outages, or emergencies, ensuring compliance with policies, procedures, and NRC regulations.
  3. Conduct routine surveys for contamination, radiation, and airborne radioactivity.
  4. Perform decontamination activities when assigned.
  5. Work shift hours on a rotational basis.
  6. Become proficient in operating radiation instrumentation and computer systems for measurements and data analysis.
  7. Assist with radioactive, hazardous, and mixed waste programs.
  8. Provide E-plan coverage and maintain qualifications.
  9. Document radiological surveys and maintain compliance with postings and warning devices.
  10. Promote safety awareness and ALARA principles.
  11. Mentor and coach decontamination personnel.
  12. Perform other duties as assigned.
INTERMEDIATE RADIATION PROTECTION TECHNICIAN

Provide radiological controls ensuring personnel and public safety.

RESPONSIBILITIES
  1. Complete all required Radiation Protection technician training and maintain OJT qualifications.
  2. Provide radiological controls during plant activities, ensuring compliance with policies and NRC.
  3. Provide E-plan coverage and maintain qualifications.
  4. Supervise work activities as a Shift Technician or HP Master Technician during refueling outages.
  5. Perform data entry for radiation protection software and operate RADS Console.
  6. Support OJT/TPE processes and perform shift duties after experience at WCGS.
  7. Conduct surveys for contamination and airborne radioactivity, operate portable instruments.
  8. Perform laboratory tests related to surveys and surveillance.
  9. Operate radiation protection instrumentation and develop reports.
  10. Ensure proper postings and promote safety and ALARA.
  11. Familiarize with work controls and support various department functions.
  12. Support the Radiation Work Permit process and evaluate shielding requirements.
  13. Perform evaluations for temporary shielding and review paperwork.
  14. Perform other duties as assigned.
REQUIREMENTS - RP Apprentice

Education/Experience:

  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Apprentice II: 1-year experience as Technician I or an Associate's degree + completion of initial training.
  • Apprentice III: 1-year experience as Technician II or an Associate's degree with one-year applicable experience.
Additional Information

Good attendance and a satisfactory work record required.

REQUIREMENTS - Intermediate RP Tech

Education/Experience:

  • Regulatory: Tech Spec 5.3.1 [ANSI/ANS 3.1-1978]; contact Licensing for deviations.
  • Three years' work experience in health physics, including one year of technical training.
  • Must be ANSI 3.1 qualified as a senior Health Physics Technician.
  • High school diploma or GED, with 1.5 years as an Intermediate Technician; promotion from Apprentice III requires 1.5 years at Wolf Creek.
Additional Requirements
  • Ability to pass respirator/heavy equipment screening physical.
  • Ability to complete Senior Health Physics exam successfully.
  • Good attendance record.
